Fred Smith, the business entrepreneur who founded FedEx, turned it into the world's largest shipping company, and normalized the idea of overnight shipping, died June 21, 2025, of natural causes in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 80.
It may have been Smith's experience as a decorated U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War that helped lead him to create an aviation-focused transportation company. He was a platoon leader who flew in an OV-10, serving two tours, retiring as a Captain, and earning the Silver and Bronze Stars, as well as two Purple Hearts. When he left the service, he became part owner of Ark Aviation Sales, which dealt in used aircraft. That experience was quickly turned to another purpose: moving goods around the country.
Smith founded FedEx in 1971, serving 25 cities with a fleet of 14 aircraft. Though not an instant success, the company soon grew to be a global giant. It revolutionized how small parcels are shipped, serving the entire globe and normalizing the idea of next-day shipping. By the 1980s, both Smith and his company were seen as industry pioneers.
"Frederick W. Smith pioneered express delivery and connected the world, shaping global commerce as we know it," current FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam said in a written statement. "His legacy of innovation, leadership, and philanthropy will continue to inspire future generations. I will miss not only his visionary leadership, but his trusted friendship and counsel."

I have many fond memories of Mr. Smith. He was a great man. My favorite memory is the day I rode on Mr. Smith's private plane. At one time in the company I heard that if you were an employee you could ride on Mr. Smith's plane in whatever city he was in. I didn't believe it, and considered it just wishful thinking. After research, however, I learned it was true. I boarded Mr. Smith's plane in San Jose, California. Those of us fortunate enough to be on the plane were briefed by Mr. Smith's PR staff member. I was just delighted to be on the plane. But true to his slogan, Mr. Smith went "above and beyond." He personally served each one of us dinner, and spent individual time with us on the plane. I will never forget his genuine care and compassion. It was one of the best rides of my life. Thank you Mr. Smith.

Fred caused two major turns in my life.
Aside from being in the same platoon with Fred at Quantico, Fred, 6 others, and I went to Monterey for 3 months to learn to speak Vietnamese.
In Monterey, our base pay was $303 per month, but we got $25 per day in per diem. We were rich. Fred had a pilot´s license and joined the Postgrad School flying club. He took me up and I was hooked. I used the per diem to get my private ticket while in Monterey and when I got back from Viet Nam, used the GI bill to get my commercial, instrument, and instructor´s licenses.
Later, when I went to Harvard Business School, I bought a plane and made more than the average graduate flying checks between Federal Reserve banks and nuclear medicines, which coincidently were the two of initial justifications for FedEx. I later owned airplanes until I moved to Bermuda (700 miles of open ocean discourages flying single engine aircraft) and racked up 1500 hours. Later, both of our sons became pilots.
Would this had happened if Fred had not taken me up ? Maybe. But I am not sure much of that would have happened if it weren´t for Fred.
When the course in Monterey ended, the other 6 went directly to Travis and flew to Viet Nam. Fred and I were last alphabetically and sent to Pendelton to retrain rear area types on how to shoot a rifle, stand lines etc. before they headed for Viet Nam. Then we went over by ship, making us "senior 2nd/LTs" when we arrived in country.
Fred went to the 5th Marines and already parachute and SCUBA qualified, I went to Force Recon. In recon, one was supposed to spend six months as a patrol leader and 6 months as a staff officer. Being highly allergic to staff work and planning on a career, I put in an AA form to transfer to the infantry because 1st/LTs with good combat records were getting rifle companies.
Careful what you wish for. Tet broke out and I took over Bravo 1/5 in Hue and they let me keep the company until I rotated back 6 months later.
Meanwhile, Fred also became a company commander in the 5th Marines and we often saw each other at regimental meetings and to coordinate patrols and fire plans. One time at regiment, Fred and I were having chow, and I asked him if he was going to make it a career. He said, "Naw, I am going to go to the Harvard Business School". At that moment in time, I had never heard of the Harvard Business School and thought that business schools taught shorthand and typing, so I asked him why he wanted to learn shorthand and typing. He then told me that they taught you how to run a company and that he planned to run a company someday. I said that we were already running companies, what more could we want ? He said that he meant a civilian company, so even in 1968, the germ of FedEx was there.
When I got to Harvard Business School, I expected to see him, but he was not there and since we did not have social media in those days, I had no idea what had happened to him. That said, I may never had gone to Harvard if Fred hadn´t planted the seed in Viet Nam.
When Fred surfaced with FedEx, we reconnected. He later engaged me to be his personal investment banker because the board was pressuring for an IPO and he wanted to explore ESOP financing as an alternative, because that was how UPS was owned (I had written the chapter on ESOP financing in the Dow Jones Treasurer´s Handbook). The IPO ultimately prevailed, but I made numerous trips to Memphis in the jump seat of one of the planes, witnessed the sort many times, and stayed with his wife and him. Few chapters in my business career have been as much fun.
Over the years we would get together, but they became more frequent when I moved to Switzerland, because he often attended Davos and we always had dinner on his way in or way out.
In 2021, Fred´s son, Arthur, was the coach of the Atlanta Falcons and they played the Jets in London. Fred invited Françoise and I to share his box and the only other couple were Dave Neeleman (founder of Jet Blue) and his wife. Françoise had recently been forced to retire for age and we talked a lot about ageism (no retirement age at FedEx) and how it applied to pilots. When I was much younger, I could scan the cockpit, know where I was in 3 dimensional space, correlate it to Jeppsen IFR plates, handle radios etc. Today, I cannot even look at the dashboard of my car and easily relate to 2 dimensional space, and know I should not be flying.
We last spoke 3 months ago. I already miss him.
Semper Fi, Fred.

I remember Fred Smith as a young lady working in Hanger 6/9 at the airport. He was one floor and I was on the other floor. I soon found out about secret panel, standing to close and landing on the floor of Fred Smith. I remember him walking around checking on his employees. A very dedicated man that had a dream and fulfilled his dream.

I´m at a loss for words for the sudden passing away of Fred W. Smith. - I´m not a veteran at FedEx. I have been at FedEx for three and half years. Let me tell you - I was taken away by the interview process --- a First for conducting it effectively and to the point. Credit it to the leadership team that has been formed under his direction. When my retired dentist heard my response to his question -- where are you working now - he was so excited and could not stop raving about the FedEx drivers, couriers and Fred W. Smith.
I saw him virtually at a Town Hall meeting when he gave an impeccable speech. First time and first impression, which led me to read more and more about our FedEx founder, Fred W. Smith. Impressed with his vast knowledge, rich vocabulary, military, academic and leadership exemplary accolades, respect & trust, sense of humor, humbleness, servant´s heart and a long list of qualifications, attributes that speak volume to the legacy that he has left behind. I read all the testaments on this obituary -- Legacy Remembers website - the least that I can do to show his impact on me! Not a waste of a moment but time well spent commemorating a legendary visionary in the global shipping industry to spot early on an all freight-airline shipping packages around the world. He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love and respect of family, friends and community; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.
Rest In Peace Fred W. Smith - And to his family - Please accept my deepest sympathies!

Mr. Smith was a great leader here in Memphis and throughout the world. What stood out to me was he was such a gentleman. Everyday he would come to work in his gray Ford Explorer whether it was a clear day, rainy day, or snow he showed up to work. One snowy day when everyone was working from home, we saw a gray vehicle come through the back entrance and of course it was Mr. Smith. He got out of his vehicle, proxy in and he had on a black coat and pants that looked like he had cleaned snow from his vehicle. Also, his shoes were slightly muddy. He tracked mud from the back entrance of the workplace all the way up to his office, including the elevator. I thought to myself he built this company and I saw how dedicated he was regardless of the circumstances. I have so many memories of this great man that gave so much. I also saw a grandfather that would actually stop at the front desk and share pictures and talked about his grandchildren every opportunity he could. They were truly a joy to Mr. Smith. I will always cherish the memories shared and you are truly missed. RIP job well done!!!

To Mrs. Smith and the entire Smith Family, sending prayers, and I offer my sincere condolences and sympathies to your family. FedEx is the greatest company anyone can work for "hire to retire" you will never want to leave because the opportunities are endless for growth, learning, and progression. All because of the visionary, ultimate strategist, and his People Service Profit philosophy, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith´s amazing philanthropy efforts not only for the city of Memphis, also globally and allows FedEx Employees the opportunities to do the same through FedEx Cares. Thank you sir, for all you have done over the last 50+ years
Our core enterprise values "We commit to do go and we take of each other" is what separates this organization from any other. This is a tremendous loss not only for the Smith, and FedEx Organization, a mighty warrior as a veteran, and an overall Great American. He will be sorely missed, rest in peace solider. We salute you To the Smith/Fedex family, I offer one of my favorite bible verses Numbers 6:24-26 to help comfort you. #webleedpurple, #fedexcares

In January of 1980 when I was called to work for them it changed my life after 15 years of working two jobs waitressing and pressing shirts! We became blood purple! Working many hours until the work was done! During my career I worked as a Manager setting up a Callcenter in Columbia Md.,Ground Operations in Huntsville Alabama and then back to Memphis to test software for development. I never met many people wherever I worked that did not give it all to make FedEx a great Company . In 2003 we left during the first buyout and it was truly a miracle from Fred and Mr. Bronzek !
Fred he changed our lives and we will always remember him and his sacrifices all of the old upper management made sacrifices of their own. Praying for Diane and the children, their sacrifices changed our lives and our children and Grandchildren´s allowing him to do what he was called to do.
Please everyone pray for them and all of us who felt like we were his family.
We will never forget his generosity and belief in us and what we could do.

To the Smith Family,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Mr. Frederick W. Smith.
I had the privilege of first meeting him in 1992, and over the years I had the honour of presenting to him on several occasions-always with a healthy dose of nerves, knowing I was in the presence of someone truly extraordinary. Those moments, however brief, were always real and memorable.
One of my most cherished experiences was working with him more closely during the Christmas break of 2000-2001 on a special project. His dedication, clarity of thought, and personal engagement left a lasting impression on me-not just as a leader, but as a human being. He had a rare ability to challenge and inspire at the same time.
I carry with me a tremendous amount of respect and gratitude for "my boss." His influence shaped not just my professional life, but my values and outlook as well.
Wishing you strength and peace as you honour his remarkable life.
With sincere sympathy,

So sorry for the loss of Mr Smith. His corporation, FedEx, has done a lot for all segments of the population. Not just the business sector, the medical center with emergency stat deliveries of organs, the financial sector , with on time deliveries of negotiables and tangibles, allowing acquisition and merger to move smoothly, for the farming industry, to get the most important items to the farmers as soon as they are needed, for example the orange juice futures. Where would the NYSE been without them , a failure might have caused the movie, Trading Places a different outcome. Mr Smith had a sense of humor and his participation in that movie proved it. So much more could be said of him, personal deliveries to our troops, delivery of personal items for comfort, the list goes on. As a nation, we are better from his Fed Ex and the way he lead for the rest of us to learn and follow. Thank you Mr Smith. May God bless you.

Just received very sad news and confirmation-Fred Smith, visionary founder of FedEx, has passed away from a heart attack. So very sad.
Meeting him, working with him, and bringing FedEx to Subic-transforming it into FedEx´s global hub-remains one of the happiest and most meaningful chapters of my life.
I remember the first time I met him when he came to Subic. I personally drove him around in my car. He was struck by the thousands of volunteers who had taken on the challenge of securing and reviving the area after the U.S. Navy's departure.
When we reached the airport, he asked me two questions: "Is China seeking hegemony in this region?" and "Can you rebuild the runway in one year?"
I stepped out of the car with him and introduced him to Felix Visey, a passionate volunteer and former CUBI Naval Air Station worker. I let Fred speak to him directly. After their conversation, Fred came back to me energized and simply said, "When and where do I sign on the dotted line?"
We were aligned in vision, determined in will, and swift in execution. And it happened. Fred Smith saw that he had found the right place and the right people-ordinary folks with extraordinary commitment-working within a Freeport zone legally crafted for bold ventures like this.
I still vividly recall the moment we signed the deal in New York in 1994. I grew emotional during my speech. President FVR patted me on the back and asked, "Are you going to cry, Dick?" I could only reply, "All the volunteers, young and old, poured their hearts into bringing FedEx to Subic."
FedEx was a game-changer-the biggest fish in the line. So much so that then-U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, John Negroponte, once asked me, "Dick, when are you going to reel that fish in?"
It was a proud day for all of us-volunteers and the nation-when the first FedEx plane landed at Subic Bay International Airport on April 30, 1995. I can say with pride: we built it. We negotiated the loan from the World Bank. We reinforced the runway with a full foot of concrete-originally built for Navy jets, now ready for FedEx´s massive, cargo-laden planes. We installed new radar systems, ILS, lighting and runway lights-everything-in under two years.
That day, I drove Fred Smith and President Ramos in my 1965 Ford Mustang convertible to witness the landing of that very first FedEx aircraft, signaling the start of full FedEx operations. We even climbed into the cockpit and posed for photographs. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.
A few years later, newly elected President Estrada signed his first administrative order removing me as Chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA). On February 06, 2009, FedEx pulled out of Subic.
The night the last FedEx plane left Subic, I drove down from Manila just to wave it off-and cried again.
To me, it was never just about logistics or contracts. It was about building a new Philippines-a country that could finally do things right. It was a sincere effort to show what Filipinos can achieve when we work together. The FedEx story was a huge boost in national morale and reinforced my faith that the Philippines can prevail.
Fred Smith believed in Subic-and he humbly came over to see for himself. He understood the hard work, the tribulations, and the hope. He saw what we were capable of and stood with us.
I sincerely commiserate with the family of Fred Smith on his passing. In the years we hadn´t seen each other, I always hoped we´d meet again to relive the great memory that was Subic,
He will be sorely missed.
Fare thee well, Fred.

This gentleman of honour, Mr. Frederick W. Smith, was the epitome of what a visionary should always be...quiet, unassuming, yet the first to defend what he believes in...I began my journey with FedEx in 1996, Hub Operations...I then migrated into FedEx Services, serving in Business Development and Sales..Some of the best training in the world I received at FedEx...It rounded out a total life career that I will always be extremely proud of..Many of the work values learned at FedEx I have applied to many challenging life situations to find suitable solutions..In 2011, former Senior VP and Treasurer, Burnetta B. Williams passed away on the job and Mr. Smith so eloquently spoke of her at her memorial that I attended...She had been a student at the same high school as myself here in Memphis a couple of years or so ahead of me...Mr. Smith reminded the attendees that she had been a graduate of Yale University just as he had and noted her natural brilliance...I could not have been more proud and honoured that he took this way to remember her..Also, in 2009, I was poised to meet Mr. Smith at a Methodist Health Foundation Luncheon at the Peabody Hotel sitting very close to him and his beautiful wife, Diane..He was extremely gracious and personally kind to me and I consider this one of my most treasured moments in the history of my employment there...Lastly, I want to thank
Mr.Smith for offering tuition reimbursement in company as I completed my MBA from Dowling College, Long Island NY..As I am retired now, I reflect on many good days at FedEx....I was considered a very loyal employee by many, but I found that to come very naturally..
Rest well, Mr. Smith....You have earned your WINGS.....

I began my career at Federal Express in 1976 in Alexandria, Virginia, and over nearly 40 years with the company, I had the honor of meeting him several times. He was always kind, respectful, and genuinely cared about his employees. His message-"Thank you, and remember to keep our customers happy"-still echoes with me today.
After retirement, I turned to charitable work in Vietnam, and once again, Mr. Smith offered his encouragement and support. His generosity and leadership made a lasting impact on my life and the lives of many.
I will miss him dearly. May he rest in peace, and may Mrs. Diane Smith and the entire family be comforted during this difficult time.

As the son of a former Army aviator/North Korea POW, my admiration is just indescribable for Mr. Smith´s quiet altruism for veterans and funding the return of service members remains from the Korean conflict. Everything my family has was made possible by the opportunity he created for me as an aviator for FedEx. My condolences to the entire Smith family. You are in our prayers. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace." ´

I served with Mr. Smith during the summer of 1968 as a forward observer with Kilo 3/5. His mentoring during that time of ground combat allowed me to survive the rest of my tour. I have been extremely proud to have known a man like him. He was truly an American hero.

We offer our deepest condolences to Diane and the entire Smith family! We are forever in Mr. Smith´s debt for starting a Company that has had a profound impact on the world and our lives personally. We had the privilege of spending time with Fred on numerous occasions. Terry started in May `72 and he saw firsthand the drive, motivation and determination of a 27 year old man whose idea would touch the lives of billions of people worldwide. It was a privilege to call him friend and if we thanked him every day , it wouldn´t be enough. RIP FWS!

I was blessed to have served on a board with Fred , had become friends and over the last couple years we were talking about an airport paving specialty business we could do together. Our board was one of the sharpest in the world when it came to entrepreneurs and economists and Fred shined above us all in many ways without trying.
I loved his outside of the box thinking, his ability to see both sides of any challenge clearly and fast. He was one of the greatest American entrepreneurs of all time.
May God Bless Fred and welcome him through the pearly gates of heaven! May God also Bless his incredible family that he loved so much.

My name is Todd Le and I am an employee at Fedex in Irvine@NZJA. I wanted to give my condolences to the Smith's family for their loss. I wanted to share how blessed I am to be working for Fedex and how I thankful I am to be part your family business.
As a Vietnamese refugee, I personally wanted to thank Mr. Smith for saving me twice, once for serving in the Vietnam War and second for creating a company that allows me to provide for my family and I. I wanted to share with him one of the best Shrimp eggrolls in Orange County. I wanted him try all the wonderful Vietnamese food that now resides in Orange county. I wanted him to see all the Vietnamese communities in Orange County that he helped created in America with his services in the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, that chance seems to have pass with his passing. But its comforting to know that his duties is done on this earth and he can rest now.
I pray that this msg will reach the Smith's family and I hope I can attend the funeral services if possible. Rest in peace Mr. Smith and again Thank you you much!!!!
I don't know what Mr. Smith Legacy will be, but for me he's a hero and a savior (kind of resembles our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ).

I remember a long time ago, we flew to Colorado Springs for the ribbon cutting of a new Data Center. During that cutting, I think it was Rob Carter who arranged a fly over of the same plane Fred flew in the Marines. He was so surprised and grateful, it brought little tears in his eyes.
I loved Mr. Smith. I don't know where I would be today if not for him. I am forever grateful.

I am. so sorry to hear about Mr. Smith´s death. As a former employee, Mr. Smith´s corporate philosophy of "People Service Profit" putting people first is something I have always held close to my heart although I have not been with the company for many years. I still

Mr Smith; was the epitome of a well rounded founder and CEO when I started my tenure of
employment @ The Memphis Hub in 1985.. His P-S-P ( People-Service-Profit) Philosophy was a representation of his character , love and affection for the citizens of Memphis and was exemplified in the foundation of many programs and benefits that were enacted at FedEx .. He employed thousands of Memphians & provided programs with excellent benefits and services. First time home owners & college students benefited from his insight into the wisdom of his Philosophy ; that if you treat people with dignity , geniune compassion, concern & justice ; you´ll get excellent service and receive outstanding profitable rewards. My sincere condolences go out to the Smith family... "Bravo Zulu Mr Frederick Smith for a job well done... Rest in Paradise"

Sending our sincere condolences to the Frederick W. Smith Family for the loss of your husband, Diane, his children, and all the family. Ron and I both worked at FedEx 25 years. Ron worked with Fred at the Memphis hub and was there when the first package went through the sorting facility. Ron is not here to tell his story. He left us March 7, 2016. I can tell you he and I were both so proud to have worked for Fred Smith at FedEx. I do not have to tell you how wonderful your husband and father was to Memphis and all his employees. Prayers for ALL who were touched by him. May his family find Peace in his legacy at this difficult time! R.I.P. Fred Smith

The gratitude Zondra and I have for Fred Smith and Federal Express is beyond words. Like many others, we have been blessed by having jobs that supported our family, sent our children to school and provided for our retirement. So many people have their "Fred" stories, Zondra and I have ours and wouldn't trade them for anything. Fred is a historical figure and knowing him has enriched our lives. We wish many blessings on the Smith family as they grieve. Our family, the city, the country and the world is grieving with you.
