Fred Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2010.
Hon. Fred John Thompson May 21, 1935 July 07, 2010 From our hands to the hands of the Lord It is with great sadness that we announce the comfortable and quiet passing of Fred Thompson on July 07, 2010 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon with his wife and family at his side. Fred is best known as the honorable member of the Saskatchewan Legislature representing the Athabasca Constituency and the New Democratic Party between 1973 and 1995. Born and raised in Big River SK and the oldest of five boys, Fred eventually moved to Buffalo Narrows where he started a mink ranch, fished and trapped. It was here that he met his wife Therese of 49 years and together they raised their three boys, Robert, Thomas and Rodney. It was also here that he discovered his love and passion for politics and the people of northern Saskatchewan. Fred's natural leadership skills, selflessness, generosity and his love for others were a perfect fit for politics. An exceptional athlete, Fred was a three time provincial boxing champion and was awarded the prestigious Cock of the Walk trophy recognizing him as the top athlete in the Canadian Navy. He was also a pitcher with the Saskatoon Nelco's and became a professional golf instructor at the age of 63. But his greatest passion was his wife and his family and we are so proud of dad for the time he spent with us, the lessons he passed on and the love and care he provided. We are especially proud of his courageous two year battle with a brain aneurism and we want to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kelly and the staff at the University of Saskatchewan, the staff at the St. Paul Palliative Care Unit and everybody at the Spruce Manor Special Care Home in Dalmeny, SK. The respect and dignity you've shown our father and our family will never be forgotten. Memorial services will be held in Buffalo Narrows on July 24th at 2:00 pm at the Lakeview Center and everyone is welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Spruce Manor Special Care Home in Dalmeny or the University of Saskatchewan Neurosurgery Department. Arrangements entrusted to MARTENS WARMAN FUNERAL HOME (934-4888).
