Fred Wiseman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2025.
Fred Elam Wiseman, 75, of Simla, Colorado passed away on March 9, 2025 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs surrounded by his family.

Fred was born July 16, 1949 in Highland, IL to Wilson and Melba Wiseman. He spent his childhood and young adult years in Greenville, IL, graduating form Greenville High School, later from Greenville College.

He later joined the Navy and served on the USS Hancock until honorably discharged in November 1971. Later he met and married Denise Gamauf on November 18, 1979.

The couple spent the first several years of marriage building a family in the Alton, IL area where they were involved with Community Christian Church before moving back to Fred's hometown of Greenville. Here they were both very active in the First Christian Church. Fred and Denise were happily married for 43 years until Denise's death in 2023.

Over the years Fred worked as a loan officer at First National Bank in Alton, an insurance agent, and finally as an investment representative in Greenville. He was known for his hard work, integrity, and devotion to his customers. He retired in 2014 moving to Simla, CO shortly after to be near his children and grandchildren. In Colorado, Fred and Denise were both devoted members of Elbert Christian Church.

As an avid outdoorsman, Fred spent as much time as he could hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. He especially loved sharing these activities with his friends, family, and in later years his grandchildren.

Fred will be remembered for his wisdom, humor, and service. He loved to help others, tell stories, and share a laugh. His commitment to community, friends, and family at every stage of life are evidenced by his service teaching, serving on the church board, membership in the Kiwanis club, singing in the church choir, and sharing his hobbies with those he loved.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents Wilson and Melba Wiseman, and his wife Denise. He is survived by his daughters Nikki (Tyler) Schield and Danielle (Jessup) Schield of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his grandchildren Jonah, Rivers, Graham, Winter, and Huck, all of Colorado; his sister Kay Dobson of Lincoln, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church Greenville, IL on Monday April 7th. Visitation at 9:30 am with service to follow at 11:00 am.

Memorial gifts may be made to Bond Christian Service Camp 1119 Missouri Blvd. Mulberry Grove, IL 62262, or Good News Productions P.O. Box 222 Joplin, MO 64802.

I work at the Simla library. Fred would come in and pick up a book or two and chat. Once in a while he would talk about his life and some of the interesting things or challenges he'd faced. I liked Fred. He was and still is a good man.

Fred was a regular patron at the Simla Library. We as a staff looked forward to seeing Fred every Monday morning shortly after 10 am and sometimes during the week. I have been worried about him since we knew he had encountered new health challenges and we haven't seen him. It is with a heavy heart that we send our sincerest condolences to the family. We missed your mother when she passed as Fred and Denise were inseparable. Now, we will miss Fred as well. The only consolation is that Fred and Denise are together again. It was a pleasure and an honor to know Fred. He is missed. The Simla Library Staff.

So sorry to hear of Fred's passing. He fought a tough fight. I always enjoyed him and Denise's visit in the Simla Thrift Store. I know I hadn't seen him lately but didn't know he was failing. Hugs and prayers for all the family.

My condolences to Fred's sister, Kay, and her family for the loss of her brother. He lived a Godly life and now reaps his reward in heaven. PTL!
