Joseph F. Portela, 64, died on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Columbus Hospital in Newark, N.J. Funeral from the Parow Funeral Home, 185 Ridge Rd., North Arlington, N.J., will be on Wednesday, March 21, at 9 a.m., thence to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington, for the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Entombment will be in Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Born in Spain, Joseph lived in Irvington, N.J., before moving to North Arlington in 1982. He worked as a machinist for Cardan Designs in Maplewood, N.J., before retiring four years ago. Earlier, he worked in the same capacity for Worthington Pump in Harrison, N.J. Joseph served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era. He was the beloved husband of Aida M. (nee Pavon); the devoted father of Margaret Portela Zatkos and her husband, Anthony, and Sofia Levchak and her husband, Cris; the cherished grandfather of Anthony Zatkos, and dear brother of the late Manuel Portela.

Aida, Margie and Sophia...there are few words I can offer that could even begin to make this difficult time more bearable. It's at a difficult time like this when we all rely more on our Faith believing that "life has not ended, but has only changed." My thoughts are prayers are with you.
