I rember well Dr Gurr from my years at Alfred hospital. He of all staff I came into contact almost ever day, impressed me with his knowledge, patience and absolute caring for his patients. Being a bacteriologist with a great interest in control of infection. I spent most of my time in the Wards, especially those with the sickest patients. This was in Wards where the most susceptible patients ended up after complicated diseases or surgery.
It was in the renal or Dialysis Wards that I found Dr Gurr plying his remarkable knowledge as a Physician.
I remember when the Administrators collated the costs of running the different specialties and often reporting that the Dialysis Unit was the most costly, but not making allowances for the fact that the vast majority of the sickest patients unable to be treated in other Units, ended up in Dialysis where they had to be treated by teams with vast experience in patient recovery. Dr Gurr was the master leader with inexhaustible knowledge.
He was a friend whom I enjoyed working with and remember him well. RIP, Bill (I could not thought our service together get to call him Bill, as I had too much respect for him), and he certainly deserved the title of Doctor!

Bill Gurr
I remember working with Bill when I was a junior RMO and he was the registrar in the Professorial Medical Unit at the Alfred Hospital working with the late Roger Melick. Bill made a major contribution to the recently established renal dialysis service. I recall his commitment as a caring, diligent and compassionate physician. My wife Mern (née Warner) was the charge nurse in ward 23 and has asked to be associated with this tribute.
