Frederick Paul Walter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2024.
Frederick (Rick) Paul Walter, Jr. passed away at the age of 81 on May 11, 2024 after a long illness.

Rick was born in Mansfield, Ohio on April 22, 1943 to Frederick and Sue Moore Walter. He lived and worked in several states over the years. He had resided in Albuquerque since 2004.

Rick received Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts Degrees in Theater and Communication from Bradley University, and a Master of Library Science from Texas Woman's University. He worked as an actor, scriptwriter, fine-arts broadcaster, publicist, translator and college theater director. He acted in over 120 live theater productions. He was an Announcer/Scriptwriter for the NPR affiliate stations in Houston and San Francisco. Rick was a Children's Librarian at Cherry Hills Library, Albuquerque and Spring Branch Library, Houston. He was an Adult Services Librarian at Taylor Ranch Library, Albuquerque and Zimmerman Library, University of New Mexico.

Rick wrote on classical music and opera for nearly half a century and published modern translations of science fiction writer Jules Verne and opera composer Richard Wagner. His last translation was of Wagner's opera The Ring Cycle. He was an active member of the North American Jules Verne Society, Alliance Francaise d'Albuquerque, Albuqueruqe Science Fiction Society and various fine-arts organizations.

Rick sought opportunities to give back to the community through volunteer work and did so with various organizations. He was especially proud of his years as a volunteer reader for Taping for the Blind in Houston and FossilWorks presenter and preparer at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. He was most grateful for his years of work and service with the Twelve Step programs.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jim Walter. He is survived by his wife Barbara Bryant; daughter and son-in-law Meredith and Callen Pollick, son Zachary Walter; grandchildren Eliana, Zev and Abigail Pollick; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Andy Walter and Jo Banks and Joe and Becky Walter; nieces Melissa Bruecks, S. Elizabeth Martino and Mary Walter-Noe; many loving extended family members and friends.

A celebration of Rick's life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make a Memorial gift in Rick's memory may donate to the American Cancer Society, https://www.cancer.org/donate/memorial-giving.htm or to a preferred charity.

I had the pleasure of knowing Rick for the 20 years. He lived in Albuquerque. It was great to be able to have him here and share our mutual love of Jules Verne´s writings and classical music. My friend will be very missed.
