Frieda Kate Cartwright Moody BLUEFIELD, Va. Mrs. Frieda Kate Cartwright Moody, age 87, of 186 Davidson Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at a Roanoke, Va., hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Swords Creek, Va., and was a daughter of the late Richard Matthew Cartwright and Annabelle Nelms Cartwright and was of the Southern Baptist faith. She was a member of the first class to graduate from Garden High School in 1939, graduating as an R.N. from the University of Virginia Hospital School of Nursing, Charlottesville, Va., in March 1946, with the "blue seal", an honor that denoted her position in her graduating class. After graduating from UVA, she moved to Grundy, Va., where she worked at Grundy hospital. She then married Clarence Moody in February 1948, and was a homemaker until her son turned 11, after which she worked for H.E. Harman Coal Company where she served as a nurse in the company's doctor's office. She enjoyed crafts and needlework and was a member of the Embroiders' Guild of America in Bristol Virginia. She enjoyed sharing her hand-knitted dishcloths with her family and friends and spending time with her beloved dog, Pib. As the youngest of her family, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; and seven older siblings. She and her husband were blessed with one son, Clarence Richard Moody, who is married to Anita Justice of Bluefield, Va.; and one granddaughter, Megan O'Neal Moody, who is married to Dustin Eils of Kansas City, Kan. Funeral services for Mrs. Frieda Kate Cartwright Moody will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Russ Hatfield officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Iley Baker, Jimmy Doak, Damion Garrison, Rush Justice, Weldon McKinney, Delmar Somoskey and Dwight Speeks. Friends called at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands after 6 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross as she was a lifetime member of that organization. Richard and Anita,
It was always such a pleasure to visit with Fredia. She could make you laugh (until it sometimes hurt!) even on your saddest day. I still chuckle when I recall how she explained to me about naming PIB! I will always treasure her uncanny wit and ability to engage a 2 year old or a 90 year old. She was truly a great person and friend to all she met. I remember meeting a person she touched all the way in Alabama in a Wal Mart of all places! God bless you in your time of loss.
