GAIL HASLER Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Oct. 27, 2015.
HASLER, Gail Elizabeth
(nee Krafchik)
(January 23, 1941 – October 23, 2015)
Dearly loved wife of Bob and mother of Laurel Anne, Gail slipped away peacefully on October 23, 2015 at the Ottawa General Hospital after battling lung cancer, the latest in a series of medical challenges she faced in recent years. Gail was predeceased by her parents Paul and Teresa (Hergott) Krafchik and leaves behind her brother Jim Krafchik and his family, as well as many other family members and friends. Always warm and welcoming, Gail was known for her joyous, exuberant nature and her hearty, infectious laugh that stood out in a crowd. She loved being in the company of family and friends. She was always interested in how others were doing and asked insightful questions and made keen observations in a way that showed she was sincerely interested and curious to learn. As her friends can attest, if she didn't like the answer she got, she always had follow-up questions that made the conversation all the more interesting. Gail also loved the outdoors and outdoor activities, such as skiing. When MS robbed her of the ability to pursue many of these activities, she became an even more voracious reader and puzzle solver. Her favourite place has long been the year-round family cottage on Pringle Lake, close to nature, which she loved to share with family and friends. She brought the cottage to life with her warmth and excitement about things, always ensuring guests signed the cottage guest book so they could relive their memories the next time they visited. A career English and Latin teacher, mainly at the high school level, Gail cared passionately for teaching. Grammar was extremely important to her, and even on her last day with us she was correcting her visitors' grammar with a twinkle in her eye. Gail had a love for and curiosity about life and people that she kept right up to her last day. The family are so thankful for the support from family and friends, and from the incredible nurses, doctors, and palliative care team at The Ottawa Hospital, General Campus. A visitation will be held from 7 - 9 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road in Ottawa. A Memorial Service / Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2015 in the Pinecrest Chapel. Should you wish, donations may be made in Gail's memory to the MS Society or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be made at

Dear Mr. Hasler and Laurel Anne: sorry to hear about Gail's passing, and the challenges she faced but with that determination and smile that made you think, things will be better. She made such a great difference in my life, not just teaching me Latin, but with her kindness and caring. All best regards for the comfort of great memories of a very fine and wonderful person.

Gail as I will always remember her, June 1966

Gail was one of my favourite teachers at Malvern Collegiate; she made me love Latin and grammar. In the last four years we have been corresponding by e-mail after I had found her again. I will always admire Gail and will miss our e-mail conversations. We were friends. My sincere sympathy to Bob, Laurel Anne and the family.
