Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 24, 2024.
Gareth Dale Gillespie, of Virginia Beach, 70, passed away on June 28, 2024, at VCU Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Born on August 3, 1953, in Bluefield, West Virginia, Gareth dedicated much of his life to his family, to service and community, characterized by his roles in the Army, the coal mines, and Civil Service.

Gareth's career began in the coal mines where he labored for a decade before enlisting in the Army. His military career spanned 20 years, including service in the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm, reflecting his commitment and valor. After his retirement from military service, he continued his dedication to public service through a 12-year tenure in Civil Service.

A loving husband to Tonya Gillespie for nearly 37 years and a cherished father to Jason Poe, Janette Young, Shannon (Franklin) Burns, and Annie Gillespie, Gareth was also a proud granddad to his 13 grandchildren Destiny (Eyan) Ross, Austin Perron, Dawson Perron, Dustin Brockman, Mathew Simpson, Jase Poe, Covey Costello, Johnny Poe, Christian Young, Payton Poe, Kyleigh Poe, Davey Burns, and Kaiden Burns. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and his role as a granddad brought him immense joy.

Gareth's hobbies included camping at Indian Cove Campground and golfing with the Red Wing Seniors Golf Association, activities that showcased his love for the outdoors and camaraderie.

Sadly, Gareth was preceded in death by his parents, Lacey Edward and Anna Mae Gillespie; his siblings, Dorothy (Dot) Myers, Lee, Robert (Bobby), John (Joe), Hubert Eugene Gillespie, and Barbara Ann Jones; and his daughter-in-law, Amanda Poe. He is survived by his loving family, including his twin sister, Gayle Uhl.

Services to honor Gareth's life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Wesley Grace United Methodist Church, 288 E Little Creek Rd, Norfolk, VA 23505, at 2:00 PM. The Cremation Society of Virginia, located in Richmond, Virginia, is assisting the family during this time.

Gareth's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family and his country, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

I will always cherish the times we golfed together with the Red Wing Senior Golf Group. Rest in Peace my Friend and say hello to Buddy for me as you two guys play the course in heaven together.
