Garrett Deane Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2023.
Garrett Earl Deane Jr., 71, of Monkton, Maryland, passed away on December 29, 2023. He was born on June 10, 1952, in Catonsville, Maryland. Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be deeply missed.

Gary was a man of strong faith. He served others as a wonderful man of God and Gospel warrior and was a dedicated member of Christ Fellowship Church. He found solace, guidance, and fulfillment in his faith community and friends. Gary had an enthusiastic, intense passion for people and the Lord. He cared about making deep connections and investing in the people he loved. His life verse that he took to heart was, "And the Lord said, 'Simon, Simon! Indeed Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brothers" (Luke 22:31-32).

In his early years, Gary attended the McDonogh School and later pursued a career in the US Merchant Marines through Calhoun Marine Engineering School. After completing his education, he worked on US Flagships until 1983.

With this experience, Gary embarked on a remarkable missionary journey. With Kathy and the girls, he first served with Operation Mobilization on their ship, the MV Doulos. He then dedicated four years in Bradford, England, with OM. In 1992, the family moved to the West Midlands where they lived until 2001. After repatriating, he worked at Anderson Automotive until retiring to care full-time for his father.

During his time at Anderson Automotive, Gary completed his Bachelor of Science in Bible, Christian Life, and Ministry in 2003 through Lancaster Bible College. In August 2022, he achieved another milestone by completing his Master of Arts in Biblical Studies with Capital Seminary and Graduate School. Gary's thirst for knowledge and dedication to his faith were evident in his academic pursuits.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gary had a zest for life and indulged in various hobbies. He loved music, spending time with his family, gardening, watching Fox News, and engaging in lively conversations. One of his greatest joys was driving his grandchildren around, creating cherished memories with them.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his daughters Jessica Maher (Patrick) and Joanna Powell (Brian); his grandchildren Kyle, Liam, Jessica, Gavin, Anna, and Savannah Powell, and Garrett and Rory Maher; his sisters Nancy Moore (Taylor), Barbara Sysak (Gary), and Anne Deane Berman (Steve); his brother John Deane (Natasha), his brother-in-law and good friend Fred Mueller, and many other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Garrett Deane, and his mother, Elizabeth Deane.

A visitation and service will be held at Christ Fellowship Church, located at 135 Industry Lane, Forest Hill, Maryland 21050. The visitation will take place on Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 1pm to 2pm, followed by the service at 2pm. For those who cannot attend, a livestream link will be posted on Gary's Facebook page.

As Gary was passionate about Jo's work with The Forgotten Initiative, a ministry for teens in foster care, and his local church, in lieu of flowers contributions can be made to
https://theforgotteninitiative.org or https://christfc.org/give.

Gary Deane will be remembered as a devoted family man and a faithful servant of God. His legacy of love, care, and lively conversation will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

I was unaware of Gary's passing until coming across this page today. I studied at Capital Seminary with him and shared many classes with him. He was always an encouragement to me and an inspiration to the whole class. He spent so much time and effort in following God during a time of his life where many sit back and relax. I can confidently say that this effort was not wasted.

I have fond memories of the square dance group Gary and Kathy helped to organize and chaperone aboard the Doulos. They were very strategic in pairing partners. My partner was always the shortest guy dancing on a given evening. We would dance as part of International Night, a cultural exhibition with a gospel message woven in. My condolences to Kathy and the girls.

Today was Gary´s memorial service...and it was wonderful in every way...we watched on line with deep appreciation, admiration and love...in awe and thankfulness to God...for every moment of the service...the pictures, the music, the personal stories from John, next...Gary´s best friend, then Kathy and the girls, the sweet testimonies and the solid Gospel message of Jesus´ love, mercy and grace offered to all of us in the new birth, salvation, eternal life, forgiveness, reconciliation, redemption and restoration...it was so touching and inspiring! We learned a lot more about Gary and Kathy and the family´s journey together with special friends and their amazing experiences. Thank you to all that made this day and service so special and heart warming.

As senior retired adult cousins, Gary and I shared (by numerous phone calls) our common experience of being "Drivers for hire", a platform arranged by Jesus...and we spoke of the amazing doors of opportunity it gave us both to witness for Jesus and the Gospel. The Holy Ghost gave us so many open doors... the riders who needed Christ, counseling, encouragement and hope. Both of us agreed, it was absolutely supernatural. Divine appointments came one right after another. I will miss those exciting conversations but cherish the ones we had in this time of our lives as retired seniors. I can hardly wait for the reunion that Jesus has planned!

Pam and I have many great and fun filled memories of Gary including Gary as our Best Man in our wedding on August 20, 1978.
Lost track of Gary, Kathy & the girls in the mid 80s while they were sailing on the missionary journey, by fate and a little luck we reconnected a few years ago and it was like we were never apart.
Gary's smile, laugh and spirit will live on in all of us that have known and loved him.
Frisbee in the park will never be the same.
Till we meet again my friend.

Gary is my first cousin and the closest to my age of all of my male cousins...I am about 18 months older...Christmas was always a time to visit either at the Deane house or our house...we all lived in Catonsville...only 15-20 minutes away...I especially enjoyed summers when the Deane´s had moved to a country property with a swimming pool! First time I ever used a diving board as an 11 year old boy. Such fun memories. My UNCLE, Dr. Garret Deane, (also my Pediatrician), and Gary´s dad, taught me how to water ski on a trip up to the Susquehanna River with them. We had a blast...and I learned quickly how to get up and how to fall too! We enjoyed singing folk music with the guitar in their club basement as kids...Peter, Paul and Mary, The Kingston Trio and more... As adults we loved talking about Jesus, Gospel ministry, missions, family life, living and travel overseas...and great memories as kids. I´ll miss calling him up anytime to chat but the reunion is close...and Jesus´ return for us is closing in fast. Much love to all the DEANES! Lance Robert Schmidt

I first met Gary after he made an announcement in front of church one day. I loved his enthusiasm for life, people, and for his Savior. He was so intrigued and wanted to hear about my story. He was a great man and which I hate using the word "was". He is smiling hard I bet right at this moment...because I know Heaven is a happy place with lots of smiles. But gosh we miss him. My deepest condolences to Kathy, Jo, Jess, and the grandkids.

I met Gary about 50 years ago at the Calhoun School of Marine Engineering. He was the mature one of us. Refusing to get into a scrap of any kind. Always a caring word. I last talked to him about a month ago concerning religion and our beliefs. Always knowledgeable in every subject he discussed. He will be greatly missed.

Gary and I were both part of a men's group that met on Wednesdays at Prince of Peace Church in Fallston, Md. To keep us straight, the other men would refer to us as Gary #1 and Gary #2. I don't know how the others felt, but, to me, Gary Deane was always #1. I will miss him. May God rest Garrett's soul.

Gary was a regular in our
Pilates class. I thought as the instructor, Yay, our class is now coed. Gary always had a smile on his face and then a grunt or grown once in a while, as he did some of the more challenging postures in class. But talk about good form and posture as he did his roll ups. Going to miss his little jokes, grunts n growns, and of course his never ending smile.

My wife, Angela, and I had the privilege of being seated next to Gary at the last CFC Core lessons. I immensely enjoyed our conversations and was struck by his humility even though he had an extraordinary story to tell. We will both miss him greatly. Our prayers are with all his family.

I will always be deeply gratified at how Gary decided to spend a day with Haitian refugee Wens when (we) his host family was out of town, buying lunch and making a full day of what was meant as "a bite to eat." Wens still feels a deep kinship with Gary.

Like many, I had the privilege of many conversations with Gary about life, and faith, and love. He was a good man with a great heart for his family, his friends, and others. Will miss you Gary and will continue to carry a piece of your gentleness and care for others with me always. Love you Deans, Powells, and Mahers!
