My heart was crushed when I heard the news of Mr. Paiz's death while fighting the fires here in Napa. There really are no words I can offer to soften the grief you have. He was so selfless to travel to our valley to help thousands of people he didn't know. We Napans will be forever grateful for his service. You are all in my prayers.

Dear Judi, Armando, Carlos, and Cindy: I viewed today's service honoring Garrett. It was so beautiful and emotional. I wish you courage and strength to sustain you as you continue life without his physical presence. But, like Pastor Martinez said, you will forever carry him in your hearts.

The reason for this second post is because I recalled a memory I wanted to share. My memory was inspired by the tribute from the second speaker. He shared so many Garrett stories, which made me think of this one. When you guys came to Austin in 1989 I believe it was, Garrett was insistent on going to San Antonio to see the Alamo. So, we head to San Antonio and he was so unimpressed! He kept saying he thought the Alamo would be covered with bullet holes and blood! I'd seen him only one time before that as a little two-year-old and his personality was very bright. It was clear he had a zest for life; you could see it in his eyes. Even though you're hurting and miss him terribly, you must also be very proud of his passion for working for others.

With love at this sad time,
Leti

Armando, Judi and Family I am so sorry for your loss. My Heart hurts for you. I want to thank you for Garrett's Bravery and Selfless service. Thank you for Your Bravery, with backing Garret's dream and dedication for being a Firefighter. He will be remembered with Gratitude for what he did for others. His bright eyes and friendly smile in his photo reveal his truth as evidenced by all the friendships he made and the Good he did. There is nothing that can comfort, but pray that thoughts and memories of his Accomplishments will help support you in some way. May the Divine Spirit from above provide Strength to all the Paiz Family during this difficult time. Thoughts and Prayers are with your Family.

To the Family of Garrett Paiz: My Condolences.........

..........on remembering Garrett.....

I remember Garrett all too well, when each morning he arrived at Mecca School and asked me to "Feel my muscles, Mrs. Ruxton. I worked out last night, do you feel anything different?" Garrett, at ages 5 and 6 desired to one day be a "football player"......nothing else. I did suggest, however, that maybe if his BIG dream didn't work out, he stay in school and perhaps when he was older, he'd find another dream. Seemingly, he did.

I also remember Garrett's sense of humor, even as a little boy. He'd tell me one of his "jokes" and the both of us would laugh uproariously! I'd say, "You should share your "funnies" with the other children." "Oh, no," said Garrett. "They don't get my jokes, just you!"

With warmest regards to Judy and Armando, Carlos and Cindy....... and other family members.

Love, Adele Ruxton

I did not have the privilege of knowing Mr. Paiz personally, though I have been holding him and his family in my heart since his death. I live in Napa, California, and was one of the thousands of residents whom he was protecting and serving this month, fighting the awful firestorm that ravaged our valley, and the neighboring valley of Sonoma. He put himself in harm's way for me and my community, and we are forever indebted to him. He sacrificed his life working tirelessly in rugged, dangerous conditions. His work prevented the further spread of destruction of homes and lives. That fire came within two miles of my home, and we are so fortunate that we were spared, thanks to the brave and dedicated people working with hardly any rest. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mr. Paiz. You are a true, brave American hero. I'm sure your wife and your whole family are so proud of you. I will never forget you.

Rest in Peace Brother. You died doing what we live to do, helping others in times of crisis. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. I was working less than a mile from the accident site and drove that grade 3 times that night in my FD tender. Your brother and sister firefighters in Napa/Sonoma/Lake Counties salute your service!

Oh My Garrett, Thank you for coming in our lives, Even if it was a short time. Yes you are a Hero! You will be missed. Your quote "If I can make someone laugh today, my job is done" You made sure everyone laughed and then some. I will miss our big hugs to each other. You stating to me "Yes Mom" all in fun. You will be truly missed, your laughter, your smile and your kind heart. Love you always, CJ

May the Road rise up to meet you
May the wind always be at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rains fall soft upon your fields
And Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand

To Garrett's family: I was so sad to hear about Garrett's death. It is difficult to understand the tragedies that happen in our world. Clearly, Garrett made a difference in the lives of so many people impacted by the Northern California fires. I know there is nothing anyone could say that would ease the pain and sorrow you feel. My hope is that Garrett's valiant efforts and your memories of him bring you peace and comfort in the days again.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Leti
