I knew Gerry in the 80's when he was stationed at Fort Lewis. He introduced me to Volksmarching, but we lost touch after he left. I remember how much he enjoyed the Volksmarching, traveling, and the War Games he played, and always seemed to have a smile on his face. So sorry of his loss to his friends and family, he will be missed in this world.

I am so sad to hear of Gerry´s passing. I remember meeting him in 1987 when he was stationed at Ft. Lewis. He loved being active all the time going to microbreweries, folklife festivals, volksmarches, war games, and even antique shopping for unique military metals. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to the Germond family.

I just got my Christmas card to Gerry back. We were friends for 50 years. I was assigned to the US Military Community Aschaffenburg Germany in 1977. Gerry and I were volksmarch partners for the next 3 years. We would look in the books the German Volksmarch Association published and say to ourselves there one 30 miles from here we can do it on Saturday and get a beer and bratwurst. He was also a board games. We played many times in Germans, and when I got off of active duty we would correspond but did not play. Under the small world Gerry stayed on active duty and was the Personnel officer for an area support group assigned to the rear area in Desert storm in 1991. My brother was a civil affairs officer in a subordinate unit in the same area and I emailed both of them to meet. I attached photos of Gerry on a walk in Germany some time in the summer of 1979.

I met Gerry in 2005 when I moved to Richmond and attended his Tuesday night games. I met many wonderful gamers here in RVA through those sessions. Gerry was always very hospitable and the go-to guy for any information about wargaming in the area. He will be missed.

Aside from seeing Gerry doing research and greeting visitors at Trinity Church (CHSV), I took many of the history courses at LLI that Gerry gave on the Civil War, or a certain battlefield site. These were very informative and Gerry liked to engage many at each lecture regarding his topic. I am blessed that I had known him, and we should all thank him for serving his country. I wish I had a chance to say goodbye, but I'd like to think that Gerry is putting another lecture together for us all to enjoy at a later date.

Gerry was my longtime friend. We had a two year romance that started at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. While he was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana and at Fort Hood, Texas, Gerry used his military leave and drove back to Ohio to see me in his orange VW Beetle. I was madly in love with him then. "Annie´s Song" by John Denver was our song. He wrote long letters, beautiful prose that showed how intelligent he was. But the long distance eventually ended the romance. Nevertheless, we remained lifelong friends. I am incredibly sad that he is gone.

Gerry was a terrific volunteer at the Chesterfield Historical Society. He sent out the notice and attended the genealogy roundtables each month and he was my go to military history guru. He would go to the Friends of the Library book sales and find military history books. He will be missed.

I met Gerry in 2010 when he welcomed me into his home and his "Tuesday Night Regulars" wargaming group. Since then I have seen him and played military/historical simulation games with him almost every week, sometimes more than once a week.

Gerry was a wealth of knowledge when it comes to military history. He always had something interesting to say, related to the campaign or scenario we were wargaming.

He was a great friend and a fun person to be around. I miss him dearly.

I first met Gerry nearly 30 years ago. He invited me to his house to do some board gaming. I can't remember the game, but what I do remember was his enthusiasm in his sincere willingness to include me in his group. Not knowing many people it meant a lot to me. I would see him on and off at different conventions over the years and he was always very friendly. And I really appreciated that we could pick up where we left off and talk for a little while.

It is my sincere hope that for his family and friends and all that knew him, that the many fond memories soften the blow of his passing. Wherever you are, I hope you get to push some counters.

I volunteer within the Chesterfield Historical Society and worked with Garth on the Veterans Database and other events. He was often a reliable participant. He was quite particular how he recorded the data. It was important to him to insure that it was as complete as he knew it to be. We often had excellent conversations regarding Civil War History. His wealth of knowledge on the Civil War was outstanding. Ask him a question and he would have the answer or provide it at a later time. He will be a hard volunteer to follow. Garth (Gerry) was a great friend to many of us and when asked he would help anyone who needed it. He will certainly be missed by those who worked with him. Thank you, Gerry, for being my friend. Rest in peace.

He was always an enthusiastic and active supported of our mission to collect, preserve, interpret and promote the history of Chesterfield County for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations. All of his fellow volunteers miss him tremendously. Thank you, Gerry.
