Gary Butler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 18 to Apr. 19, 2023.
Gary Clyde Butler, 76, passed away at his home in Sarasota, FL on Monday, April 10, 2023. Gary, the son of Clyde Spinks and Emily McNeal Butler, and older brother to Glenn and Douglas, was born on October 31, 1946. He attended Briarcliff High School in Atlanta, later earning a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering from The Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from The University of Georgia.

In December of 1969, Gary and Nell Alfriend, of Sparta, GA, began their thirty-year marriage. In 1975, Gary took his first position at Automatic Data Processing (ADP). Beginning as an Outside Sales Representative, Gary built a distinguished career over a nearly four-decade-long tenure with the company. He rose through the ranks to hold increasing leadership positions, ultimately becoming CEO in 2006 until his retirement in 2011. He loved ADP and was deeply committed to the business and its people. He was especially proud of ADP's global expansion under his direction and was fueled by the complexity of work and relationships that it required. Gary was known for his untenable, yet incredible, knack for rooting out an issue within seconds and was highly regarded for his tenacity, unflinching viewpoints, and superb intelligence. While he expected much of those who worked with him, he also delighted in their success and was regarded as a great mentor and friend.

In addition to Gary's executive leadership at ADP, he served on various corporate boards, including Liberty Mutual Group, DeVry, Inc., CIT Group, and Convergys Corporation.

Pursuant to his success, Gary established The Gary C. Butler Family Foundation and gave his time, intellect and resources to a multitude of non-profits. Of great pride to Gary were his efforts supporting land conservation through Ducks Unlimited, and funding a professor Chair in the Industrial and Systems Engineering School at Georgia Tech.

Outside of his work life, Gary had three great loves - bird hunting, red wine and family. Every Fall and Winter, Gary could be found in any one of his favorite hunting spots -Turkey Hill in South Carolina, the rice fields of Arkansas, farmlands of Saskatchewan, Diamond Dot Ranch in South Dakota, or the hills of Montana. Here Gary found immense satisfaction and camaraderie in sharing his love for the land and sport with family and friends. Equal to his passion for hunting, was his love for red wine. Many reading this will recall memorable wine trips with Gary to Napa and Bordeaux, boisterous wine tasting dinners, and his generosity of "knock your socks off" wines from his private cellar. Sharing of his passions was one of his life's greatest pleasures.

As for his family, Gary leaves behind his great love, Elizabeth, with whom he shared the last ten years of his life; his son, Paul Ira Butler and wife Molly of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his daughter Claire Butler DeLong and husband Joe, of Summit, NJ; and his nephew Tyler Butler of Atlanta, GA. Gary is also survived by his seven grandchildren, who knew him as their 'Grandpa' and whom he loved fiercely: Abigail, Emily and Jack Butler; Ben, Madeline, Mary and Cate DeLong. And of course, Parker, his last of a long line of Brittany Spaniel companions.

Gary took great pride in his family and was a giant in our eyes. His high standards and seemingly all-encompassing knowledge have left an indelible print on our lives, and a legacy of success and generosity that will be known for generations. Despite his tough and sometimes immovable exterior, the depth and breadth of Gary's love was never in doubt. He will always be remembered for the steadfast ways he showed his love, his unwavering belief in our capabilities, and his astoundingly warm heart that fueled his determined footsteps.

Arrangements are being made for a celebration of Gary's life, with details forthcoming. Should you wish to send condolences, please send a donation in his name to any one of the following organizations in which he was involved:

JOHN MCCABE
Gary and I attended high school school together at Briarcliff High School and college at Ga Tech. After college I went to work as an accountant in a family practice and Gary went to work in sales with Burroughs Corporation selling small business computers. I eventually purchased a computer from Gary. He then went to work for ADP selling payroll processing services. He called me to advise one of his clients with their accounting and tax issues I took on the job only to discover the client was being investigated by the IRS for fraud. By that time I learned that Gary had been promoted and I was left to deal with "our " client.

I didn´t blame Gary for the problems with our client and we moved d on. Gary called and asked if I wanted to go quail hunting with him and his bird dog, Not being one to turn down a chance to go hunting we made plans for a trip to some property Gary had permission to hunt. We went on a weekday afternoon after two days of heavy rain. To make the story short we found ourselves on a muddy hill in my car and Gary convinced me to push the car while he drove. We got up the hill but I was covered in mud.

I could only laugh at the situation because Gary was so good at making himself come out good in any situation. I always admired him for that.

I will miss Gary as I do many of my friends who are no longer with us.

I was more than saddened this past week when I saw a short "In Memoriam" notice in the Fall 2023 Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine. It said that Gary Butler had passed away in April of this year in Sarasota, FL. I googled his obituary. What a full and wonderful life he had!

Gary and I went to Briarcliff High School (BHS) in DeKalb County GA (Atlanta) in the early to mid 1960s. We were in many advanced level classes together all through high school. We served in the Key Club; he was the Key Club President in the 1964 senior year. He was an accomplished athlete. He was on the swimming team from 9th thru 12th grade and the tennis team in the 11th and 12th grades. He was voted "Most Popular" guy in the 12th grade. We both went to Georgia Tech and graduated in 1968. As he wrote in my BHS yearbook, we were "fine friends." We remained "fine friends" in college.
While we went our separate ways after Georgia Tech, we always made sure to see and talk with each other at the 10th through 50th BHS class reunions. We would have had our 10 year get together this coming April 2024 for the 60th reunion. But that is not to be. Instead, I will drink a tall glass of quality red wine in Gary´s memory at the reunion and know that he will be there in spirit. As I imagine his family does, I miss Gary being in this world. Cheers Gary; there never was a "finer friend" than you.

I worked in sales with Gary at ADP in the early 90s in Hoffman Estates. He was the president at the time. He was always early to the office and I frequently said good morning to him at the coffee station. Gary was a great man to work with. He talked to clients with such sincerity, he reminded me of Jimmy Stewart in the movie Shenandoah. One year at a Truck convention in Nashville, we had the "Dessert Party" at The Grand Ole Opry. Gary got up on Grand Ole Opry stage and did a clog dance for all of us. (similar to a River Dance) It surprised the heck out of everyone. Apparently he had learned this as a child. He was friendly and down to earth. An inspiration to us all.

Enjoyed knowing Gary for years while we spent time hunting quail on my property at Oakgrove Plantation in SC and the occasions when invited to hunt quail at Turkey Hill.

I first met Gary at an ADP President's Club trip in Bermuda when he was an ADP sales rep in Atlanta and I was a sales rep in Houston. He had just accepted the Sales Exec position in Dallas. We became close business associates and friends over the years, and I marveled at Gary's meteoric rise in ADP leadership positions.
Gary was a great, leader, mentor, and friend. My condolences to the family and loved ones.

I am so sad to hear of Gary's passing. He was an exceptionally, talented leader who had a clear understanding of what direction he wanted and charted a course accordingly. I learned so very much from him. Gary was a wonderful mentor and friend to me, who greatly influenced my career. I am forever grateful to him. He will be missed by many and may he rest in peace.

He will always be uncle Gary to me. My father-in-law, John Nash, and he were really good friends and when I married John´s daughter, he sent my résumé to Gary as I was in between jobs. Gary sent it down to his Dallas Texas team for review. A year or so later after I´ve been hired, one of the sales managers was asking me if I was Gary´s nephew as they had seen Gary´s name on my résumé. Of course I never answered the question and just let him assume.

I´ve had the privilege to play golf with Gary and go on a hunting trip down to South America with him. And he always made a big deal of my young children whenever we would meet in Hilton head and play golf.

Rest in peace, Gary. Thanks for the memories.

when I hired Gary into ADP
48 years ago we were just a couple of guys that road trail bikes on Sundays. Sometimes Nell and Beth were on the back. It was so impressive watching Gary's rise at ADP. In our later years we both shared our affection for wine and quail hunting. Gary had a full life and will be missed by many.
