Gary Cheatum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 24, 2025.
Gary Cheatum, 79, passed away on May 12, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas. Born on March 5, 1946, in Wichita, he remained closely connected to his hometown throughout his life.

Gary dedicated over four decades of his professional life to Cessna/Textron, where he built a respected career marked by commitment and longevity. After retiring from the aviation industry, he embraced a new chapter as a long-distance trucker, continuing to explore the open road with the same dedication he brought to all his endeavors.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gary was known for his many talents and passions. A skilled woodworker and avid sailor, he found joy both in crafting with his hands and navigating the waters. He was a longtime member of the Ninnescah Sailing Association, where his contributions left a lasting legacy. Gary originated and organized the KBRS racing program and served as Vice Commodore for many years. His leadership and enthusiasm helped shape the sailing community he so deeply cherished.

Gary's generosity extended far beyond formal roles-he was always willing to lend a hand or offer guidance to anyone facing a challenge. His willingness to help others reflected a spirit of kindness that touched many lives.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Victoria (Viki) Cheatum of Wichita, Kansas; his brothers Roger Cheatum and sister-in-law Adel Cheatum of Daytona Beach, Florida; and Alan Cheatum and sister-in-law Kathy Cheatum of Garden City, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Cheatum and Helen Jean Cheatum.

Memorial has been established with Ninnescah Sailing Association Junior Sailing.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire acts of generosity and passion for life. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 14, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 02:00 PM at Ninnescah Sailing Association, Afterdeck Clubhouse Cheney State Park. State Park Permits Required for entry.

I have known Gary for the past 10 years. He was very friendly and humerous. During my term as Vice Commodore of NSA, he was very helpful donating or finding the right equipment to install on the club boats. He also gave valuable advice as a past Vice Commodore himself, that helped me during my tenure. I had the privelage of raceing with him for half a season, which I shall never forget. He will be missed.

I'm having trouble without my Sat. breakfast with Gary. I miss our coordinated solutions to the world's problems. Greatly missed, but greatly tempered!

I believe Gary has located Mother Nature, and is calling attention to the low water level, and pointing out the watershed for Cheney Lake.

Gary was a fun Captain. He tried to teach me how to sail. I enjoyed the banter!

Countless times over the years, Gary came to my rescue on sailing and car projects that were challenging. He never criticized my ignorance, and always listened to my suggestions before implementing his. Even when our troubleshooting went nowhere, he would make sure I took a break and came back motivated & in a good mood. In my short, but adventurous life, I´ve been around a lot of talented people, but Gary was multi talented. Truly, a unique and valuable friend.
