Gary McCann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2023.
Gary Lee McCann, 81, of Renton, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2023, at his forever family home in Renton surrounded by family. Gary was born on April 30th, 1941, to Arthur and Lillian McCann in Oakes, North Dakota. He was the second born of four children in the McCann family.
The McCann family decided to move and make a new life when Gary was eleven years old to Renton. Gary attended both St. Anthony's and Renton High School.
After high school, Gary worked for his father at Art McCann & Sons alongside his brother, Bob. He was a truck driver and operator of heavy equipment. In 1972, he started Gary McCann Trucking which is still operating today. In 2022, Gary McCann Trucking celebrated its 50-year anniversary with wife, Paula, sons, Kevin and Tim, and daughter Tina. They all worked side by side with him for the many years at Gary McCann Trucking and loved the business as much as he did. His legacy of trucking in the Puget Sound will continue to grow with his kids and grandchildren.
Gary stuck to his roots of farming/ranching where he grew up in North Dakota and took pride in building a small farm and family home in Renton, WA where he and Paula raised their beloved family. He enjoyed raising livestock and not only had a true passion for "farm life" with his family but loved horses. He loved to ride horses, drive ponies, participate in parades driving his horses, competing in Crazy "8" competitions, and had several racehorses at Longacres and Emerald Downs.
Gary also built a legacy of horses with his fourth child, daughter, Trisha. Gary bought her first horse at four years old and was at her side for every horse event from then on through all her competitions. Proudly, this passion has now transferred to his granddaughter, Chloe with her devotion and love of riding and showing. Gary has also inspired other family members with livestock.
Gary had many more hobbies and passions; showing his antique Mack Trucks, antique cars, and hot rods which he collected over the years. He belonged to many clubs and made many great friends along the way. However, Gary's greatest joy came from his large family. He had a sparkle in his eye every time family was around.
Gary was truly loved and respected by so many. The Renton, Maple Valley, and Enumclaw communities would recognize his mint dump truck that he drove around to parades. He will be so greatly missed and live forever in our hearts. Gary always had a smile on his face that could light up any room. He always preached forgiveness and was a great believer of the Lord. He had a positive attitude and had a ferocious will to live; always a "I won't give up" and "I want to live" mentality even in the worse times and until the end of his life. Gary had a strong love of faith which served him well during his long, difficult battle with cancer. His love for God, family and people was so evident and visible with his every action.
With great sadness, Gary, husband, dad, papa, brother, friend, we say goodbye and we love you always and forever.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob McCann; sister, Linda Fjeld; grandson, Matthew McCann. He is survived by his high school sweetheart, Paula McCann (married sixty years!), children, Kevin (Stefanie) McCann, Tim McCann, Tina (Keith) Benson, and Trisha (Brian) Smith; sister, Judie Ingram; sister in law, Mary Jo (Ray) Conwell; grandchildren, Justin McCann (Courtney) Deter, Cody McCann, Nick McCann, Levi McCann, Jacob McCann, Josh McCann, Luke McCann, Taylor Benson, Torre Benson, Karsen Benson, Kylie Benson, Conner Smith, Chloe Smith, Cameryn Smith, Charley Smith, Camila (Coco) Smith and Camden Smith; great grandchildren, Maverick McCann and Maylee McCann.
Funeral services will be held at the following: Funeral (mass) at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Renton on January 23rd, 11 am, Burial at Greenwood Cemetery, Renton, 2 pm, and Celebration of Life at Meridian Valley Country Club, Kent, 4 pm.

Gary was a truly inspirational man. The whole time I knew Gary he was battling cancer. Despite the gravity of the situation, he was always had a positive attitude and a love for life. Gary was clearly forged from steel. I had never known anyone with such an iron will to live. After meeting his family, I understand. Gary was blessed with a beautiful family. He had many hobbies and interests but loved talking about his family most of all. Thank you for being a dear friend.

Dear Papa,

Where do I begin. First and foremost, you need to hear that you are the perfect representation of what a Grandfather should be to his Grandson. Throughout my life, I have countless vivid memories of true happiness being shared and expressed amongst each other. You always made sure smiles and laughter were involved in everything we did together. I love the times of you saddling up your ponies just to have us ride around the property. Again, it took a lot of time to put something like that together, but you knew creating a new memory together made it all worth it. I remember the times when I would come downstairs seeing you sitting in your classic rocking chair with your favorite red checkered blanket across your body with your foot roller in action. Those years bonding over WWE Wrestling, looking forward to watching Monday Night Raw or Friday Night Smackdown together on the Big T.V. is something I will cherish forever. Let's not forget about you and Nannie taking Dad, me, Jacob, Josh, and Luke together in the White Cadillac to church at either St. Anthony's, St. Stephan's, or St. Johns every Sunday morning on Dad's weekends. We would always stop by Starbucks to grab a coffee on the way home. Such fun times. Fast forward, lets reminisce on us going together to the many Return to Renton Car Shows or joining you in your Cle Elum parades. These were so fun because it always made me more happy to see you happy. I get so much satisfaction from seeing others express their happiness and that comes from you setting the example. You and Nannie have done such a tremendous job in raising your four special children and them doing the same to all of your beautiful grandchildren. You should be so proud of what you've accomplished in setting the perfect example of how an individual should carry themselves through life. I'm crying tears of joy writing this message to you Papa because you are perfect. You are one of a kind. Your smile is everything to me and it's the reason why I do the same every day. You're the reason I push through the hard times in my life. Your battle has shown me that even when things happen in our lives that we don't agree with or we ask "Why does this have to happen to me?" we have to look on the positive side and not dwell on the negative. You always did that. Again, this mindset is something I will put forth for the rest of my life. If Papa can do it, I can do it. This motto has been instilled in each and every one of your grandchildren. I'm looking forward to catching up with you Papa. You always did the same to me. Whether it's at church on a Sunday morning, kneeling at my bedside before bed, or on the car ride home from work, I can't wait to talk to you and see how you're doing. I love you more than you will ever know. Talk to you soon.

Love, your Grandson

Dad,

Nothing ever prepares you for saying good-bye to someone you love so much and has been such an inspiration in your everyday life. Dad your love, your laugh, and all the memories we have made and life lessons that you have taught me will always be in my heart forever.
There is not a day that goes by, that I do not think of you. I already miss you so much! Seeing you come into the office each morning with your big smile, going to Starbucks or grabbing a quick bite to eat, I cherish all the moments with you.
You have been the best dad any daughter could ever ask for. You always took time to help me out with anything I asked you without hesitation. Your love for me and our entire family has shown us the appreciation and gratitude that family comes first and how you truly loved your big family. You provided well for your family and your hard work and determination never went unnoticed. You always gave it your all and instilled a strong work ethic in all of us.
I have always loved spending time with you and have cherished and valued my entire life with you. I admire how you faced the last couple of years with your fight with cancer, you determination was beyond admirable. The strength that you had will always be unforgettable and inspiring.
Until we meet again, I love you Dad!!

Papa,
You´ll always be remembered to me as the most faithful, confident, determined, hard- working man who truly pioneered your way through life in more ways than one. You may have had a little stubborn streak, but it was because you knew exactly what you wanted out of life and you did whatever it took to get it. I will forever cherish all our memories we shared together, especially you calling me early in the morning, walking through the office door, a trip to get a latte with a bacon Gouda on the side, a parade over east, or a walk out to the barn to do something with the horses, Nannie probably told you not to. You taught me many things, but the most important thing I learned from you was that investing time into family is foremost and to have Faith in the Lord through all the good and bad parts of life.

I love you Pops
I miss you dearly
& your legacy will live on
