Dr. Gary W. Melton died peacefully at home on September 27th, 2005, holding the hands of his wife and son.
Gary was born October 20th, 1952, in Murray, Kentucky. He lost the father who adored him, Warren Melton, at age 8 and was affected by this his entire life. He was raised in Murray by his mother Yvonne Melton now of McKinleyville.
Gary sang and played guitar like his father and started one of his many bands while still in high school. He married his "polish princess" Jill Ann Komorowski on August 18th, 1973. He graduated from Murray State University, Kentucky, with a BA in 1974, a MS in 1975 and a SCT in 1976 all in radio, television, and journalism. In 1980 he earned his PhD from Bowling Green State University (Ohio).
Gary began his work career in radio in 1971, in Murray, Kentucky, and his teaching career at Lincoln Memorial University, Tennessee, in 1976. He also taught at Bowling Green State and Western Carolina University, North Carolina. In 1982 he joined the faculty of the radio-tv department at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
In May 1989, Gary received the prestigious "Excellence in Teaching Award" as the professor of the year for the State of Arkansas. He was most gratified that he was nominated for the highly coveted award by his students. Besides other honors, Gary also had numerous publications including a video documentary "One of a Kind" now in the Film and Video archive of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Gary also made presentations to innumerable conventions and symposiums throughout the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Austria. He was invited to participate in the Annenberg program in Washington, D.C., the Gannet Center at Columbia University, NY, and the International Technology Conference in Ilmenau, Germany, among others.
In the fall of 1989, Gary came to Humboldt State University. He was a tenured full professor in the Journalism and Mass Communication Department at the time of his death. Gary also taught in the fall of 1996 at Bielefeld Universitaet in Germany. His list of accomplishments could fill pages. But the love of his professional life was the students and HSU’s student-run Radio Station KRFH-AM which he started in 1990. His legacy will remain in the many lives he positively influenced both academically and personally. His former students are spread across the country from the NY Times to CNN to the local media. Gary also loved music especially the Beatles. He was part of the local band called "The Mad River Project" which is completing a CD.
Gary is survived by his wife, Jill Ann Melton; and son, Jason K. Melton of McKinleyville. He is also survived by his in-laws who absorbed the shy southern boy into their boisterous ethnic family: his parents-in-law, Alice and Arthur Komorowski of Vineland, NJ, who made him his favorite foods during his illness; his brother-in-law, Jan Komorowski of La Veta, Colorado, who opened his home to a family reunion in July; his sister-in-law, Janine Knoer, who he advised on her lovelife and her husband Jim; his fishing and cigar smoking buddy and their children, James and Natalie who Gary was thrilled to have introduced to his Beatles, all of Taylorsville, KY; his sister-in-law, Julie Smith who went into the media field and her husband Rufus of Charlottsville, North Carolina; also his wife’s aunt, Florence Mazurek of Syracuse, New York, who hosted the infamous pinochle parties. He is also survived by his aunt’s and their husbands, Lee and Ken Pace of Kentucky, Pam and Charles vanDyke of Tennessee, and their son Beau and cousins including, Mike Orr of Maryland as well as many other family members in KY and VA.
As difficult as it was to lose my husband, losing a best friend, and Jason losing his dad were almost unbearable. We were greatly comforted during his illness and after by the thoughts and prayers, the letters, cards, cd’s, and tapes that we received. Gary knew he was loved and well thought of by so many of you. Thank you. Thanks also to HCAR, and to Hospice who made our last weeks more comfortable and peaceful. Special thanks to his friends Steve and Ernie who always bolstered his spirits with the guitar and pecan pie.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the "Professor Gary Melton Memorial Trust" at Humboldt State University, Gift Processing Center, 1 Harpst Street, Arcata, CA 95521-8299 with checks made payable to Humboldt State University.
One more day, one more night and I’d be satisfied. But then again it would leave me wanting one more day...

Gary,
I had the honor of knowing you for all four years I spent at HSU. Your passion and commitment for KRFH was infectous. Being a part of KRFH and knowing you changed my life and will always be a part of my most precious memories. I never knew a professor cooler than you with your gold chain and love of The Beatles. And hey, thanks to you, I dig the Fab Four too. I will miss you Gary. We all will.
Love, Brooke

Today is advising and many students who were advisees' of Gary will be thinking of him. I never was, but I always wished I was. He is still, and will always be cherished here at HSU.

A former student recently wrote this about Gary.
"I was really sorry to hear about the sad news. Gary was a great teacher who you could tell really cared about his students and his job. He will be greatly missed around the hallways of HSU. I am sure the atmosphere around the Brett Hart House is just not the same."
Well said, Joe!

Jill and Jason,
Gary is the coolest teacher that I have ever had. He came to class with a smirk on his face and his pocket full of knowledge. Most importantly, he taught me how to do what needed to be done, and to have FUN doing it. When I think of Gary, I think of KRFH students snapping (NOT CLAPPING) to his jokes so we wouldn't bother the precious forestry people in the rooms around us... I know that all of Gary's students, inlcuding me, loved him and his class. I just wanted to pass this along. Good luck to you both in the times ahead- you'll be in my thoughts.

Dear Jill & Jason and Mrs. Melton,
Everyone who cares for Gary misses him. Today, on his birthday, I'm thinking about you all with sadness for your loss, but also with gladness remembering the things I liked best about him. Lots of things.
May knowing how much he's missed be of comfort to you all.
Happy Birthday, Gary. It's angel food cake this year.

Jill and Jason: You have all been in our thoughts throughout these past months. As neighbors and as infrequently we seem to cross paths, except for the sunny days, all of you will always be part of our lives in Humboldt and on Fortune Street... Dustin I'm sure has been in Gary's sight and sound these past 19 years (willingly or not!) much more than Dennis or I, and Dustin portrays Gary as always singin' on his guitar and rockin' with his music. Our hearts and prayers are with you both and know you are always part of our lives "on the block" and our house which is always open. -Carolyn, Dennis and Dustin

Dear Gary
I came to Humboldt State as a radio guy and left as a teacher and I thank you so much for that. I worked in a small corner office of Gist Hall and you were the first person I saw in the morning, the last I saw at night.
It does not surprise me that your students have gone on to greatness because I know you inspired them to do so. You inspired me as well.
I saw students who put such faith in you and I came to do the same. And my life is richer for having followed your guidance.
Your insight, your wit and your music are all great gifts to us. But your greatest gift is seen in those whose lives you touched.
God's Peace Dear Friend

Academically and personally, Gary was a true original. He had a classic sense of coolness, and will be missed greatly. The radio program will never be the same. He will remain an inspiration to me.

Dear Jill, Jason & Mrs. Melton:
October 20, 1952, Gary was born.
How could anyone have known that he would touch so many lives with his kindness, humor and friendship. I was touched by his thoughtfulness and fun-loving spirit, especially one year on my birthday when he surprised me by bringing a boom box and cassette tape to the office. He wished me a happy birthday and played the Beatles birthday song. What a guy! I miss him so much!
Happy Birthday, Gary

It pains me to have to sign this guest book, but I feel privilaged too because Dr. Melton showed me the ART in radio and broadcast media. I know I will never have another professor who inspired me quite like Gary did. God Bless you both and may you feel the love of everyone who knew him.

To Jill and Jason,
Thanks again for your hospitality when I visited my friend and colleague Gary who was one of the nicest guys I've ever met. It comes in my mind what Gary said when we were standing in front of the old medieval house (in Erfurt) where Martin Luther lived when he was a student: "It's good to keep walking even though the wind is sometimes too strong to move ...".

My sympathy lies with those who never had the chance to work/know/or listen to Gary.. He was the best professor ever created. Without a doubt, radio will never be the same without him..
All my love to all of you who know what your missing....

Jill & Jason,
Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Gary was a dear friend and a tremendous inspiration. He will live forever in the hearts and minds of his many students. The impact Gary made on my life was profound. His lessons are with me always as I am a much better man for knowing him.
I will never forget.

My prayers go out to Gary's family and friends at your time of loss. It is difficult for me to deal with, and I am 800 miles away and a former student of his. I can only imagine what you all are going through. I pray that God gives you all everlasting peace and comfort.
I owe all I know about radio to Dr. Melton. His teaching gave me the confidence I needed to pursue my MTV project. I will never forget how proud of me he was when I went to New York. I am currently in Bellfower, Ca working everyday towards a career in broadcasting. Thanks for everything Gary!
Rest In Peace.
