GREGORY WIRT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2010.
Gregory John Wirt, 60, died August 26, 2010, at his home in Olathe, Kansas, after a long illness. Greg was born September 1, 1949, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Raymond John and Ethel Mae Wirt. He grew up on the family's farm near Hurley, South Dakota. He married Gloria Marie Hansen of Hurley, South Dakota, on October 17, 1970. Greg served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1975 and was a Machinist Mate First Class on the fast attack submarine the U.S.S. Sunfish from 1971 to 1975. After his discharge from the Navy, Greg worked as a total energy plant operator for Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1982, he received his degree in mechanical engineering from South Dakota State University. The same year, the Wirts moved to Olathe, Kansas. Greg worked for Black & Veatch in Overland Park for several years and then for Burns & McDonnell as an associate mechanical engineer. He retired in May, 2010, after 22 years of employment with Burns & McDonnell. Greg loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles and often went riding with his son John. Some of his favorite vacations were the ones that he and his wife, Gloria, took on the motorcycle to places like Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. He also enjoyed riding in the Black Hills and attending the Sturgis Rally in his home state of South Dakota. Greg had an eye for seeing how things could be improved or repaired. Once Greg fixed something, it stayed fixed for good! He liked to share his knowledge of engineering and was a mentor to many young engineers. He is survived by his wife Gloria; his son John; his parents; brother Gary Wirt; brother James Wirt, his wife Kristi and their sons, Jesse and Justin; sister- in-law Elaine Pedersen and her son Steve; brother-in-law DeWayne Hansen and his children Matt, Sarah, and Ashley; sister-in-law Doreen Hansen and her children Mark and Karen Eisenbraun; and brother-in-law Richard Hansen. He is preceded in death by his younger brother Jack. Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The South Dakota State University College of Engineering, 815 Medary Avenue, Box 525, Brookings, SD 57007. 888-747-SDSU. www.sdsufoundation.org To leave a special message for the family please visit www.PenwellGabelOlathe.com

Gloria and John, we were so saddened to hear of Greg's passing. Although we didn't know Greg that well, on the occassions we were together, he was always the first to say hello and make you feel welcomed. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

Greg, you will be sorely missed. I am so glad that you finally made it to Alaska. Elton John was fun and so were all the other things you and Gloria did while you were here. I am looking at the Captain Cook Hotel right now and it reminds me of my birthday dinner we had during that trip. Rest well, God is with you. Love, Elaine

He was also a great uncle with one of the best sense of humor and also making sure there was plenty of cold beer in the fridge when you came to visit. I cannot believe how fast he was taken from us. Gloria and John even though I don't keep in touch as much as I should I do love you guys and am always thinking about you and that goes with the rest of the family! I just wish he was here for at least "Just One More Incy Wincy Beer!

Gloria and Family,
Greg and I worked together on many projects at Burns & McDonnell. We often traveled together when making site visits to our projects around the country. Greg was always quick with a joke and had a way of making you smile, even after your worst day. He will be missed at B&McD not only as a great mechanical engineer and project manager, but as a friend to many of us. I am sorry for your loss.

Gloria & John: Greg and I started at Burns & McDonnell at about the same time back in 1988. We've worked together on numerous projects since then up to as recent as spring this year just before Greg retired. He was great to work with, fun to travel with and enjoyable to be around. Truly a good friend. He will greatly be missed. Please accept my deepest sympathy and prayers.

My prayers to Greg's family. He and I were in the same riding group at Burns & McDonnell, and I had the pleasure of riding with him on a couple of occasions. He impressed me with his soft spoken and kind demeanor. He will be missed.

Gloria and John,
You have our greatest sympathies and are in our prayers. Greg was a good friend and he was the real deal. He will live on strongly in memory and I'll be thinking of him when I ride. I feel that when friends and family pass on they become a part of us and help guide our lives and comfort us if we let them. I am honored to have known Greg as a friend.

Gloria, John and Family:
Greg was a great and loyal friend. He helped me and many others through rough patches, and he helped celebrate victories at work and in life. He loved and honored you when speaking about his family. He will indeed be missed. Our prayers are with you in this tough time.

Gloria,
So very sad to hear about Greg's passing. I worked with Greg at Black & Veatch, as a drafter for several years. What a great guy he was. We worked hard as a group and we played just as hard! My husband, Dale, an engineer, also new Greg from Black & Veatch. I remeber the day I broke all his red pencils and left them on his desk, because of all the red marks he had on his drawings. The client kept changing their mind on where this TANK should be located!! The cement cake for Engineers Week. And of course the styrofoam cake I gave him at the same time. He was great to work for and a great friend at work. Take care, our thoughts and prayers are with both you and John.
