I was surprised when I saw that Gary was originally from Elyria, Ohio, not so far from my hometown and that Erin was from the Chicago suburb immediately next to the one where I lived for 8 years. I am sad but proud of this hero. I have been trying to locate the addresses of you his parents and Erin but not available in Japan where I live. With friends, in a pre-set meeting, we went to Yokosuka a few days after the tragedy.

I know your are proud of him but will miss all the wonderful memories, and Gary himself. May God be with you as you mourn.

Rest easy my friend, you will be missed by many. It is an honor to have served with you. I will never forget your actions and sacrifice. True courage is rarely seen or heard of, it ran deeply in you. Others continue on due to your actions, I hope that they appreciate their second chance you gave them. Thank you my friend, rest , you have earned it.

All I can do is pray and ask God to comfort you and tell you that while I may have never known FC1 personally I feel that the ones who did were blessed indeed.

Gary was a fierce friend that would do anything for anyone. A great leader, shipmate, and friend to the end. He made us all laugh, and I was fortunate enough to call him my brother in arms, shipmate, and friend. Thank you for all you taught me, and for all the ups and downs we shared together.
