Gary Schmid Obituary

Published by Daily Record from Mar. 3 to Mar. 12, 2014.
Gary Lloyd Schmid
On February 22, 2014 Gary passed away at Virginia Mason Hospital from advanced pancreatic cancer at age 71. He was born in Nampa, Idaho April 19, 1942 to Lloyd and Phoebe Schmid.
Gary enjoyed several activities including hiking, snow and water skiing, and especially watching his horses run at the racetrack.
Gary received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in 1966 after his undergrad at Seattle Pacific University. Shortly after graduating WSU, he partnered with Dr Don Mee at the Valley Veterinary Hospital, which came under his ownership for much of the 37 years he practiced veterinary medicine.
Although he enjoyed working with all animals, Gary had a passion for horses that lead to a hobby of breeding and racing thoroughbreds. Even in retirement, he enjoyed caring for his racehorses and helping others in the breeding process. But his greatest joy was seeing his own horses cross the finish line which made all his hard work worthwhile. Gary also spent time with his grandchildren, as well as inspiring those around the community involved with Rotary, AA, and animals.
Gary was involved in several groups including Morning Rotary Club, AA, WSU Alumni, WA Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association.
Gary Schmid is survived by his wife Barbara Schmid of Ellensburg; son Matthew (Shantel) Schmid of Kansas City; daughter Jennifer (Troy) Brantley of Ellensburg; son Brendan (Shannon) Schmid of Ellensburg; grandchildren Sydney, D'Marco, DeAndre', Taylor, Jade, Hannah, Sarah, Jerin, and Isaiah; sister Cheryl (Ed) Wilkinson of Moses Lake; sister Deborah Fash-Desai (Naren Desai) of Scottsdale, AZ.
Please join us in celebrating Gary's inspiring life on March 22, 2014 at the Liberty Theater on 5th and Pine in Ellensburg, WA at 2.00PM, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gary's memory and his love for animals to the College of Veterinary Medicine, PO Box 647010, Pullman, WA 99164.

Gary was a great neighbor for many years in Grasslands. We shared ownership of a tractor for winter plowing and grass cutting. I had just chatted with him a few weeks ago. A wonderful friend for so many years. My sympathy to his family on his passing.

Dear Schmidt Family,
We are sorry to hear of Gary's passing. We purchased the gray filly last year. His love for the horses and his determination to "keep busy" was so inspiring to us. We said many times we want to have Gary's attitude! God Bless you all
