Gary Springmeyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2026.
Gary Allan Springmeyer, 70, of Morris, Connecticut, passed away on March 13, 2026, with family and friends by his side.

Born on February 24, 1956, Gary grew up in Newton, Connecticut and Bethlehem, Connecticut, where his love of music, classic cars, and the arts began at an early age. He attended Western Connecticut State University and Southern Connecticut State University, earning a master's degree in psychology. After beginning his professional career in product development at General Motors, Gary eventually stepped away from corporate work to fully pursue his lifelong passions for music, art, and engineering.

A talented musician, Gary performed lead guitar and vocals with local bands, drawing inspiration from artists such as Neil Young and Keith Richards. He later founded his luthier business, Springmeyer Vintage Restoration, where his craftsmanship and attention to detail earned him the respect of musicians and collectors alike. Through his work restoring vintage instruments, Gary brought countless guitars back to life while building lasting friendships with customers, fellow musicians, and students who shared his love of music.

In addition to being a gifted musician, craftsman, and artist, Gary had a deep appreciation for classic cars and enjoyed restoring them whenever he could. His natural environment was a workshop or garage, where he could often be found working with his hands while engaging in thoughtful conversations about history, music, film, and trivia. Those who knew him appreciated his distinctive sense of humor-sometimes dry, sometimes wonderfully goofy.

Gary will be remembered for his creativity, intelligence, generosity, and the passion he brought to everything he built, restored, and shared with others. The instruments he restored and the music he played will continue to carry his spirit forward for years to come.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Natalie Paige Springmeyer (Scottie DeFries); his daughter, Elizabeth Louise Springmeyer; his son, Stuart Johnson Springmeyer; and his grandson, Archie Allan DeFries. He is also survived by his three brothers, Glenn (and nieces Danielle and Christine), Kenneth, and Eric Springmeyer. He will also be warmly remembered by his former wife and the mother of his children, Carol Johnson Stuart, as well as by many friends, fellow musicians, and customers who became cherished companions over the years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Allan Harold Springmeyer, and mother, Anne Elizabeth Springmeyer.

The family also extends their heartfelt gratitude to RVNA Hospice for their compassion and support in his final months.
