Dear Marlene, I have just heard and want to wish you all sympathy. Forgive this late message but I only realised as I could not make e.mail contact.
I remember Gavin as someone I came to know in my forties and who has been in contact ever since as in our minds we were family. I hope you will stay in contact if you wish to

Dear Marlene (if I may),
I have only just read Gavin's so kind words to me about the death of my son Tom. I came online to thank him and read with utter disbelief the news of his death. I cannot believe it. Although it is a long time since I last saw him, Gavin was a special and very dear friend and I send you the very deepest condolences. Still suffering from the shock of sudden loss myself I can only offer you my sympathy. I'd always hoped to perhaps come over and see him again and meet you. What a loss to the world. I am SO sorry.

Marlene, Gavin was one of our favorite people ever. He came into the shop frequently and was a great friend to us on many levels. We were astounded and deeply saddened to learn of his passing and you are in our hearts. -- John Schulman and the Caliban Bookshop staff.

Marlene,
Annie called me from Florida to let me know of Gavin's passing. I was leaving early the next morning for Florida to visit my brother, so was unable to call. I was stunned to learn of his death, for to me he was a person who was so very much alive! I recall the last time we were together, when he talked about the book he was working on. I loved his wit and caring ways.

Marlene
We are so sorry to hear about Gavin. Some people are so special.
Gavin was one of them. Even though we did not see him often, we considered him a friend and will miss him. We have pleasant memories of him talking about life in England, especially when he was a child during the war. What a special person he was.
