I was deeply fortunate to have met Gavin in 2006 when I reached out to him, seeking permission to use one of his songs in a play I was directing. He responded with such enthusiasm and generosity, allowing me to include it. A few years later, as the Supreme Court prepared to make its landmark decision on marriage equality, I sent him a message on Facebook. I suggested that, given his large fanbase, he might consider changing his middle name to "Equality" on the platform, since so many others were doing so. Without hesitation, he replied, "I'm gonna do it, are you?" His excitement made me feel as though we were friends. True to his word, he changed his middle name, and the trend soon spread internationally. (I still have the screenshots to remember that moment.) Later, I had the privilege of meeting him while he was performing in Hair, and his kindness toward me was nothing short of remarkable. He truly embodied everything people said about him at his memorial.

I will always remember his smile. God, that smile. I fell in love with Gavin, long before I saw him perform live, or met him. He imprinted on my heart. He inspired so many, onstage and off. I'm gutted. And Grateful. So lucky to have been in his orbit. I know he is performing for a very lucky, heavenly, audience. My love and prayers, go out to the Creel family, and his partner. Thank you Gavin. Love you forever. Keep Shining.

Gavin has always been one of the kindest individuals I've ever had the pleasure to have known. The world has lost an incredible human being with the kindest heart. His talent was only second to his kindness and love for humankind.
