Gene was my best friend in college at Sam Houston State from '67-'70. I lost touch of him when I transferred to North Texas State Univ. I too was also a drummer. Gene helped me with my playing, guiding me to become a faster and more professional drummer. I tried several times to find him over the years, but never could. Reading that he pasted last year has hit me very hard. I feel that I should have tried harder to find him. I would love to talk to anyone who could tell me of his life and family. He was the Best Man at my wedding in 1970. He helped me to grow into a more mature player and "man." I feel honored to have known him.......even if it was for a short time.

Gene was kind, kind, kind and gracious, gracious, gracious. We had the good fortune of studying the drums with him, as a family. I keep thinking of his dynamic smile and enthusiasm. He was alive with his love of drumming. As a teacher he was an enthusiastic, joyful, funny, and engaged. What a special human being in every way! He adored his daughter and his wife, and his beloved musician friends at Frank's Place in Indian Wells. We are so grateful to have studied with The Great Gene Wagner! We will never, EVER forget this remarkable man. Our time together was a gift.

Gene was a great drummer and an even greater person. He was so kind and generous and always cracking jokes to keep us smiling. I had the honor of having him as my drummer in my band for 4 years. If it hadn't been for Gene, I wouldn't have even formed my band, he always urged me to keep singing and believe in my talent. We miss you so much Gene but we are glad that you are in a better place now. I know you are now cracking up the angels in Heaven....

Gene has always been my drum mentor and good friend. He and I shared gigs in Houston for years. He was a great talent and his humor was legendary! He will be missed! Until we meet again my friend.
