Gene Westover Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2015.
Delmar G. (Gene) Westover

May 7, 1934 – August 2, 2015

Gene was born at the home of his grandparents on the Westover farm near Putnam, OK on May 7, 1934. He was the only child of Claude and Geneva (Peck) Westover and married the love of his life Wanetta Keeler on December 22, 1957. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Bill and Bertha Keeler as well as his son James Brian Westover. He leaves behind Wanetta and their remaining 5 children, Michael and his wife Jennifer, David and his wife Susan (Jan), Sheri, Thomas and his wife Angela, Gina and her husband Jim Francis; 9 grandsons and 3 granddaughters; 1 great grandson. He was admired and well respected by his peers in the Oil and Gas industry. Gene was greatly influenced by his childhood on the farm beginning with his grandparents (Ira Lee and Nellie Westover) and continuing as his parents took over the operation in his childhood. He believed in hard work, being honest, and always doing your best regardless of the job. These virtues were passed down to his children and grandchildren as well. Gene graduated from Oklahoma A&M (OSU) in 1956 with a degree in Geology and specialized in geophysics. He had many hobbies but his passions were his job and his family. Gene's career took the family to many locations from Ankara Turkey through Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Texas. Through all of these moves his compassion and his love for family attracted many additional "family" members who loved him as their own father. Services will be Saturday, August 8th at 2pm at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper, 6600 Broadway Ext., Oklahoma City, OK 73116 with viewing on Friday August 7th from 5 – 7pm. As he often said to his grandchildren "I'LL SEE YOU IN THE FUNNY PAPERS!".

My condolences to the Westover family. I ran around some with Gene in high school and he was a great person then and sounds like he carried that throughout his life. What a great family. I know he will be missed greatly.

David, you may not remember me, but you worked for my husband, Jay, and I during the summer, during harvest. Jay has been gone since 2008. I know what a close family you have. My thought and prayers are with all of you.

Sincerely,

Pat and I send our heartfelt condolences to the entire Westover family. I have many childhood memories of Gene and some of the things we did. The strongest memory was the week that Gene and I spent in Amarillo Texas with my Aunt and Uncle. They showed the "country boys" a great time. Sightseeing, girl watching (I had a girl cousin a year or so older and she had many girl friends), a football game and food like we had not had before. And we ate plenty of it. We had a great time and I will always remember Gene and my week in Texas!!

I worked with Gene at EOG Resources until he retired. He always had the "one important invoice" at the beginning of each month and would always submit it with a smile.

Tom and I cannot well express our sorrow at Gene's passing, and our every thought and prayer go out to you, Wanetta and Sherri, for the incredible loss you feel. Such a spectacular spirit Gene possessed and we will forever treasure the moments we all enjoyed together. God bless you all. Deb and Tom Pierce.

I worked with Gene at EOG Resources for the past 15 years and found him to be a man of integrity and a very amicable guy. We shared a Birthday, so we became office "twins", which he brought up often. I am missing him and holding the family up in prayer. God bless you all.

My heart goes out to Wanetta and the entire Westover family. Gene was "salt of the earth good people" and I know his passing leaves an enormous hole in their lives. I was fortunate enough to call Mr. Westover my second dad for a brief but important time in my young life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched. What a beautiful soul.
