General John Wickham, Jr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2024.
Gen John Adams Wickham Jr, age 95, born in Dobbs Ferry, New York June 25, 1928 passed away peacefully on May 11, 2024 in Oro Valley, Arizona. He is survived by his beloved wife Ann Prior Wickham of 69 years, Oro Valley, AZ.

A 1950 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point NY, John had extensive duty with combat units beginning in Berlin as a company commander through division and theater commands, with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and US Forces Korea, in Seoul, Republic of Korea. In October 1967, while an infantry battalion commander for the 5th Battalion 7th Cavalry 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) he earned his first Silver Star for Valor. A month later, he earned a second Silver Star for the Battle of LZ Colt, where he was nearly mortally wounded. On his second tour in Vietnam as a one-star general, he served as Deputy Chief and US Representative for the Four-Party Joint Military Commission in Vietnam negotiating the peace treaty and prisoner of war issues with North Vietnamese and Viet Cong leaders. After being promoted to a four star general officer, he commanded over half a million men and women as Commander in Chief, US and Korean forces, and United Nations Command in Korea.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan appointed General Wickham as the 30th Chief of Staff of the Army, responsible for over $70 billion of annual programs, leading the Army to upwards of 2 million soldiers and civilian employees. He vigorously pursued modernization of the Army with particular focus on advanced technology and information systems. He sought retention of high-quality soldiers, improvement in ground and aviation safety standards (achieving the best records in Army history), promoting professional development and quality of life for soldiers and their families, and the strengthening of Army values, leadership, and ethics. The Army's creation of Light Infantry Divisions, development of high technology capabilities, and substantial increase in combat battalions within the existing strength of the Army were among his initiatives. He spearheaded the first Army Family Action Plan. Working closely with Air Force Chief of Staff General Gabriel, he also pursued initiatives to minimize duplication of programs and to strengthen cooperation with the Air Force in war fighting and doctrine. Four initiatives led to cost avoidance of over one billion dollars. Other initiatives created improved battlefield capabilities which were employed successfully during the recent Gulf Wars.

From 1954-1956, Wickham attended Harvard University, earning master's degrees in Public Administration and in Politics, Economics and Government. He subsequently served as an associate professor in the Social Science Department at West Point. His US military decorations included 8 Distinguished Service Medals (Defense, Army, Navy, Air Force), 2 Silver Stars for valor, 4 Legions of Merit, 11 Air Medals, Bronze Star for Valor, and Purple Heart. Combat Infantry badge, Expert Infantry badge and Parachute badge. He received 21 foreign decorations, including the Republic of Korea's highest military award. In 2005, he received West Point's Distinguished Graduate Award. In 2006, he received the US Army Infantry Center's Doughboy Award.

Following 41 years of service, of which serving 17 years as a general officer, he became the President and CEO of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. Wickham served on several boards and was board chairman for Honeywell and Nortel Federal Systems. He was director of the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research, Vice Chairman of the United States-China National Committee, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served on the Secretary of Defense's Policy Board. In 2005, he wrote "Korea on the Brink-From the 12/12 Incident to the Kwangju Uprising in 2000" published by the National Defense University Press.

John and Ann retired again to the Southwest in Sun City, Tucson from 1992-2006. He was president of Sun City Vistoso Foundation, a nonprofit organization and served as an ordained Elder with St Andrews Presbyterian church. They moved to nearby Splendido afterwards where he served as president of the resident council. John also served on the Pima County Regional Transportation Advisory committee and the Oro Valley Community Foundation. General Wickham was a guest commentator on the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour during the 1st Gulf War, 1990-1991 and on CNN in 2003 commenting on the US focus in Bagdad. John was also a frequent guest of his long-time friend Bill Buckmaster, first on PBS Arizona Illustrated and subsequently on the monthly The Bill Buckmaster Show speaking on global and military issues.

He was preceded in death by his father, COL John Adams Wickham, Sr USA (Ret.) his mother, Jean Koch, and sisters Joan Wickham, Joyce Ray and Nancy Boyd. He is survived by his daughter Lindsley Harner and LTC William Harner, USA (Ret.) of Carlisle, PA, and son Matthew Wickham, and Mary Ellen Wickham of Conifer, Colorado. His son John Wickham III preceded him in death. He has 6 grandchildren Dr. William Harner, Jr LTC USA, CPT Jessica Harner USA (Ret.), Arthur Wickham and Andrew Wickham. And son John's children, Blake and Shane Wickham. He has three great-grandchildren: Lani Crayon, Ezra Harner and Oliver Wickham.

General John Wickham possessed a deep abiding Christian faith and love for his country, his beloved wife, and family. He was an avid hiker, RV enthusiast, an eternal tinkerer and Mr. Fix-it around the house. He was a road cyclist enjoying his recumbent bike. He read voraciously, mostly biographies and history books. John also loved poetry later in life publishing his personal poems in his book "On Life, Love, and Living." He helped train their Belgian Malinois dogs with his wife Annie for agility competitions. Always approachable, always willing to help, John was a friend to all he met.

Should friends desire, donations in his honor can be made to Freedom Service Dogs Inc. and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Condolences can be mailed to P.O. Box 1012, Conifer, Colorado 80433 or posted to Legacy.com. To be interred at West Point Cemetery at a later date.

This is my second post to Gen. Wickham, as I didn't mention something very important in the first one.
I was the Pathfinder Team Sgt on L.Z. Colt during the attack on the night of Oct 10, 1967, when then LTC Wickham was wounded, as was I. We were fortunate to have had a Command Chopper pilot by the name of Jim Rassmutin who came in to get the LTC Wickham when the Medevacs would not. It was that act of heroism that saved his life, as he had been shot multiple times.
I was medevaced with head wounds, on the first ship out to 15th Med, where LTC Wickham had been taken. Upon seeing his wounds, he was given his last rites and left alone as they thought he had bled out, and the operating room was filling up with wounded from the L.Z. Colt attack.
As I was getting my head wound stitched up, LTC Wickham raised up and said, "It's cold in here, I need a blanket". Needless to say, things started moving very fast after that.
That was the last time I saw him in my three tours in Vietnam.
I visited him in Tucson on October 27, 2021. His mind was as sharp as a tack, and he remembered me.
A truly great man and leader. I pray for him every night.

My husband, Air Force Lt. Col William Rowley Jr. was stationed in Seoul, S. Korea with Gen. Wickham from 1797-1981. Fortunately our 15 month old daughter and myself were able to accompany my husband.
I had the privilege of meeting the Gen. and Mrs Wickham on several occasions. I was always impressed how kind they both were to the soldiers visiting them at the various posts and inviting them to dinner.
On one occasion Mrs Wickham asked me if I knew some families who lived off post that would share what their needs were and how they could help.
I have to say I was deeply moved by how much she and Gen. Wickham genuinely cared. He was a man of integrity. I was also very excited when Mrs Wickham invited me to ride in the general’s car
I just recently lost my husband who served in the Air Force 23 years and we both looked back fondly at the time we were stationed at Yong San.
God bless General Wickham and his family.
May he RIP

I had the privilege of caring for John, as he insisted I call him, in his later years. We had some of the most interesting conversations and I will cherish them forever. A more humble, kind, gentle, intelligent man, you couldn't find. My love to Annie and the family.

Well I was in one of the light infantry divisions he created and read his white paper which led to that creation. He was a visionary and cared about the soldiers and their family as well as winning. You are the father of the light infantry. RIP

I served as General Wickham´s driver for part of the time he was at Fort Campbell. That was such an honor for myself. During the past couple of years I was able to visit him twice. It was so interesting. I told him, if I knew then what I know today he would of fire me the first day driving for him (continually asking questions). He was such a joy to visit with. General, you were an inspiration to my life. Rest in Peace, God be with you. Randal Lees SP/4 1975

GEN John Wickham is recognized as one of the Army's finest Chief of Staff. He survived miraculously his overrun position in Vietnam despite all odds. He was the strategist behind the Light Infantry Division, and for years appeared on McNeil/Lehrer News Hour as an expert on foreign affairs and national strategy. When I would call my friend, he would pick up the conversation from the last call a year prior, and always had time for me as a fellow West Point grad. His son served as my legal counsel. There are few like this, that rare combination of intelligence, physical toughness, and decency. God Bless you Sir, we will miss you! You earned your place in Heaven. Duty, honor, country!

Our world has lost a tremendous man and great leader. I first met General Wickham several years ago when asked by then Amphi School Superintendent, Dr Vicki Balentine, to be part of the Amphi Schools Advisory Committee. It was an honor just to be in the same room with this former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He mesmerized all of us with his knowledge and leadership yet was always willing to listen openly to the ideas and thoughts of everyone. Never quick to judge, despite having far more knowledge and experience than anyone in the room. I found myself looking forward to those many after hours meetings just to listen to this incredible man. His wisdom, knowledge, and leadership was simply incredible.
My deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones. Thanks for sharing him with us. I´m a better person for having known him and I´ll never forget him.

My deepest condolences to the family, I first met the General on the DMZ at Camp Greaves, ROK while his son John was assigned to our Battalion. He was a concerned leader who deeply cared for the Soldiers. I felt extremely fortunate to have such a man to lead us in the ROK. I will never forget the time I had to share some M&Ms from my ammo pouch when he reentered my Jeep to return to Greaves from the JSA. He had a quick smile and a soft laugh then. RIP, General, and Thank You for those kind words that day.

I first met General Wickham during my campaign for Mayor for the Town of Oro Valley. His public support for my election was bewildering to me given the status of whom he was. John said that he saw something in me that was very special and for that I can never thank him enough. Together with Patricia Linder, Sandy and Jim Briney, and myself, we created the Oro Valley Veteran's Support Initiative. It was an initiative designed to help former and current service members and their families in four distinct areas in order for them to reengage with society after having served. These four areas were: Health, Employment, Education, and Discounts (from local retailers). The Oro Valley Town Council, with me presiding as Mayor, unanimously passed a proclamation supporting the Oro Valley Veteran's Support Initiative town wide. Well after retirement from the US Army, John was still very concerned about the well being of soldiers. I will forever remember his compassion, kindness, respect and humility he exhibited to everyone who came across his path. General John Wickham was a giant among men. Rest in peace John. Your rest is well deserved.

I did not know the General, but I know his son Matt, and it seems like the apple did not fall far from the tree. A good measure of a man; I can only image (reading above) what this spectacular family has accomplished, individually and collectively. God Bless the General and his family.

John came to the Oro Valley library at my invitation to talk about his experiences in Korea. We had a standing room only crowd. After his talk, John sold his book about Korea and gave all the proceeds to the library.

I got to know John & Ann personally when we walked our dogs in the same neighborhood. We shared a few meals together and I was always so impressed with his intellect and his humility. He took a lot of heat when he opposed the Iraq war. He hated what it was doing to our troops and their marriages.

He was a gentleman, a scholar and a true patriot. May he rest in a well deserved peace.

"Ad astra per aspera" GEN. Wickham. May God provide peace to your family with the certain knowledge that this is not goodbye, only farewell till we rejoice in the Heavens. You pinned my wings on me in 1977 as I stood awestruck and somewhat frightened in your presence. Your leadership and guidance are a part of the 101st Legacy. I am proud to have known you, served alongside you, and Honor your life. Your indomitable will and personality are now imbedded in the lives of your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ya'll can be proud, for he is a soldier's soldier. Heaven is secure with you and CSM Joe Bossi and all those others holding a place marker for us to follow on....... "Air Assault, Sir!"

Dear General Wickham's Family,

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of General Wickham. He was a great American hero, one whom I admired deeply and had the honor of serving under in Korea. He spent a day with me in Korea and I learned about him and his vision for the Army.

His leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his country left an indelible mark on all soldiers.

May you find solace in knowing that General Wickham's legacy will continue to inspire countless others. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

God bless General Wickham's family.

With deepest sympathy,
Ronald Valentine

The first time I ever met LTC. Wickham was at Camp Evans in Vietnam as the 5/7 Battalion of the 1st Cavalry was preparing to secure the Que Son Valley and ready our move North for the 1968 TET Offensive. I was called into his Command Center and asked how we, the 229th Pathfinder team would help with the operation. He was very receptive to what I explained and said "Thank you, Sergeant." He was very easy to work with and received suggestions very well. Frankly, I was initially afraid of him, but he put me at ease right away.

I was in Charlie company when the NVA attacked LZ Colt. Gen Whickham told the Battalion commander not to let the wounded women from the village see all that was there. The doctor over ruled him. Look up Battle of LZ Colt. Whole story told. SGT Alan Wilenken C5/7. March 67-March 68. Rest in peace General.
