GEORGE ARCEGA SUNGA

October 2, 1932 - November 7, 2023

Judith Ann Sunga was born in San Diego, CA. on October 20, 1936 to Carl & Laura Parslow. The family lived in the Kensington Area of San Diego and Judy attended Franklin Elementary School. In 1952, after her mother's untimely passing, Judy's dad relocated the family to their ranch in Campo, CA. Judy attended Mountain Empire High School where she was active in the Girl's Glee, Girl's League, Annual Staff and Editor of the school newspaper. She was also a Majorette and Cheerleader. Judy graduated from MEHS in 1954.

George Arcega Sunga was born in San Diego, CA. on October 2, 1932 to Socorro & Gervacio Sunga. George lived in the Logan Heights Area of San Diego and attended Logan Elementary, Memorial Junior High and graduated from San Diego High School in 1950. During his years at SDHS, George was a Life Member of the California Scholarship Federation, ASB Vice-President and lettered in Varsity Tennis and Wrestling. George was also a member of the Thespians, Drama Club and Debate Team bringing home countless awards to SDHS for speech and debate competitions.

George enrolled at San Diego State College in 1950, majoring in Speech Arts (Radio & Television). George was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, honored as a Who's Who in American Colleges & Universities in '53, '54 and '55, served as Associated Men Students President in '53 and Associated Students President in '55 and selected to serve on two Honor Fraternities: Oceotl '54 and Blue Key '54-'55.

Judy enrolled at San Diego State College in 1954, majoring in Elementary Education. Judy was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, served as Secretary and Vice-President. Judy was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Phi Upsilon, nationally recognized honor societies in education. In 1958, Judy was a Song Leader and crowned "Miss Flapper" for the TKE's Varsity Drag Dance. In 1956, Judy was a member of Cetza, a lower division service organization for women and in 1958 was tapped for Cap & Gown as one of fifteen top women seniors.

George met Judy in 1954 and the rest is history! Although George stood 5'-7" tall, he was the current Associated Students President and was a "Big Man on Campus" and that might have caught Judy's interest. However the story goes, the attraction was there and this began a 69 year love affair. In June 1955, George graduated from SDSC and began working at CBS Television City in Los Angeles. George came down every weekend to see Judy -- this routine continued for 3 years! After Judy's graduation in June 1958, George & Judy were married at Saint Anne Catholic Church in Logan Heights.

In 1958, George & Judy Sunga began their 64-year journey together in Los Angeles. Judy began her teaching profession at an elementary school. To enhance some of her classroom lessons, Judy introduced outside reading materials and played the piano and sang songs for music enrichment. Drawing criticism from the school district, Judy leaves teaching and joins the Los Angeles Museum of Art as a volunteer, putting her experience as a teacher and skills in art, music and history to good work as a docent, teacher and museum tour guide. During her several decades of service to LACMA, Judy served as Chairperson for the Museum Service Council.

During the early 1950s, the Golden Age of Television had just begun and George claimed his spot as a college student, convincing his professors to allow him to earn college credits to study television production outside of the classroom. Wholly unconventional at the time, George's vision resulted in landing his first job in Los Angeles, working in the mailroom of CBS Television City, the iconic broadcast facility. In retrospect, George would look back at the steady upward trail that led him from dispatching trucks and messengers, to stage crew scheduler and on and on, learning with every step. It all brought him to the day he was made the first production supervisor of The Judy Garland Show. George's list of accomplishments include producing or associate producing The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, All In the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Three's Company, The Ropers, and Three's A Crowd. In 1989, George became an officer of the Television Academy, serving as the Governor of the Producers Peer Group for five terms and served as chair/co-chair of the Emmy Awards Committee for six years. A Filipino American, George served on the Board of the Producers Guild of America and was the founding chairman of the Guild's Diversity & Inclusion Committee, which promotes diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry. This strong commitment led to the creation of an award in George's honor - Media Access Producers Guild of America George Sunga Award - distributed yearly at the Media Access Awards.

George is preceded in death by his mother Socorro A. and step-father Eduardo L. Paraiso, brother Eduardo D. Paraiso and nephew Eduardo A. Paraiso. He is survived by brother Norman Paraiso, sister Marci Heider, sister-in-law Margaret Lozano Paraiso, brother-in-law Bob Heider and many nieces and nephews.

Judy is preceded in death by her mother and father Laura and Carl Parslow, uncle Earl Parslow and brother-in-law Joe Brennan. She is survived by sister Linda Brennan and nephew Lance Brennan and niece Carole Brennan.

In lieu of flowers, financial contributions in memory of George & Judy Sunga can be made to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (to be added to its Acquisition Fund); The Nature Conservatory of Arlington, Virginia; San Diego State University Library Special Collection Fund; or the San Diego High School Foundation (for the purpose of maintaining the Lois Perkins Theater)

@ Loretta Halter
I just read your beautiful memory of my sister-in-law Judy Sunga and it brought back fond memories of how she incorporated music and art into her curriculum because she felt that her students would benefit from these subjects, too. I am writing to share a serendipitous moment. As I read your story, something jarred my memory - when the family had the arduous and sorrowful task of cleaning out Judy & George´s home, there were tons of books that were boxed and donated - we virtually closed our eyes, boxed up a wonderful collection of fiction, art and television-related books and said goodbye to them forever. However, I´m not sure where I discovered your books but the titles and the illustrations caught my eye and I decided to keep them for myself. I am now convinced that there was a reason for me to save your books. They are now in good hands and I will cherish them in Judy´s memory.
Regards,
Marci Paraiso Heider

I only wish I had learned sooner of the loss of my beloved and favorite 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Sunga. We had kept up postal mail correspondences for years and I savored all her letters. I can not adequately convey what an inspiration she was to me as a young girl of 8. All I can say is that because of her gentle nature and fun approach to teaching us, I often used to play teacher with my dolls. I made up lessons to help my dolls learn math and spelling. Years later, with Mrs. Sunga's indelible example engraved in my heart, I became a third grade teacher and now, after nearly 30 years of teaching, have taught almost every grade level between 2nd grade to 8th. But Mrs. Sunga did not stop there. She wrote a beautiful review for my children's book, a sequel to my first book, Lacy's Journey: the Life of a Decorator Crab. She even included my brother Steve Halter, as the narrator and musician for both my books, since she had Steve in her class too, about five years before I became her pupil. I am forever grateful to her for how she reached my shy and insecure heart as a young girl, and fostered a passion for poetry and art in me as well as all those students with me. I am grateful for the friend she became as I was growing, appreciating her progressive attitude and her appreciation for all of life! How blessed I was and still am for having her in my life. With greatest Love, I offer this memory.

I had the pleasure of meeting George last year when I helped arrange for him to visit the Mulholland Tennis Club, that I manage, and where he and Judy were active members in the 70's and 80's. While on the visit he ran into other members that have been around since her was active in the club, and the reminisced of the great times they had together. They spoke of his skill in playing the Yukele at the Luau, and his participation in the many Variety Shows the club would host. I invited George to come back and join us for our Luau in August. I was thrilled that he was able to make it, the picture of us below.

I was not aware of his passing until I saw his name and image during the - In Memoriam- part of the Emmys last week. Very saddened see his name on the TV, but take comfort he is with the love of his life Judy... RIP George

George Sunga graduated from San Diego State College, probably in 1956, and he was a force of nature. A superstar! He stood out as outstanding among a number of outstanding students! I was a lowly freshman, a pledge in his fraternity (TKE), and I was mesmerized by his talent and personality. What a loss!!! Judge Victor Bianchini

So many active employees had fond memories of working with George. But even after retiring from CBS, he continued to serve as President of the CBS retirees group, “The Frogs”. Bless his soul.

When I was pretty young, having George and Judy show us, my brother and I all around the LA important spots! Being from northern Cal, to see the La Brea Tar Pits, LA Museum of Art and Farmers Market as a special tour they knew all of and their expertise, then taking us to a Vietnamese Restaurant was all which could be imagined by a wide eyed country girl! So fortunate.
