George Chadwick Obituary

Mr. George A. "Jay" Chadwick Jr., 89, a resident of Buckinghams Choice, Adamstown, former long-time resident of Boyds, died Friday, July 20.
His first marriage to Eleanor W. Margerum ended in divorce. His second wife was Avaleen Gazaway Seamans Chadwick.
Born Nov. 20, 1911, in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Va., he was a son of the late George A. and Asenath Graves Chadwick.
For many years, Mr. Chadwick's home was at Washington Grove.
He graduated from Gaithersburg High School and St. Albans School. He received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and his bachelor of laws from Georgetown University. He was admitted to the District of Columbia bar in 1936 and to the Maryland bar in 1944.
He conducted the Chadwick Bar Review School from1937 until his entry into the armed forces in 1943. Many of his former students were counted as his lifelong friends.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and held the rank of captain upon his discharge in 1946.
Mr. Chadwick launched a career in the private practice of law in 1937. In 1938 he became associated with the firm of Frost, Myers and Towers. Except for his military service, he continued his affiliation with that firm and its successor, Frost & Towers, until 1968, when he became associated with his son, Charles M. Chadwick, in general practice in Washington and Rockville.
Although a great deal of his practice was concerned with government contracts, he never lost his interest in trial work. During the latter part of his career he represented Sperry Rand Corp. and was general counsel and a director of Southern Oxygen Co. and the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. In 1976, he was inducted into the HBPA's Hall of Fame in Rockingham Park, N.H.
Following his retirement from law, he participated in the organization and operation of Maryland Midland Railway Inc. He was the first president of the company and later served as chairman of the board of directors for a number of years.
He was a member of the Princeton clubs of Washington and New York City, the Army and Navy Club, the Barristers and Barber-Briggs American Legion Post 247. He was founder of the Boyds Federal Credit Union and was listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Railroading.
For most of his life, Mr. Chadwick was a communicant of the Church of the Ascension, Gaithersburg, where he had served in many offices. Since 1983, he was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Poolesville.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, George A. Chadwick III of Alexandria, Charles M. Chadwick of Union Bridge, Jane Seamans Adams of Blodget, Ore., and Dan L. Seamans of Boyds; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Church of the Ascension, 205 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg.
Interment will be private.
