George E. Egbert passed away on February 16, 2021 at the age of 71. Born in Jersey City on August 14, 1949 to loving parents Edward and Mary Egbert. George went on to marry the “love of his life” the late Francine (nee Higham ) and resided in Rutherford for the past 37 years. George became a member of the Rutherford Police Department in 1975, rising to the level of Captain in Charge before retiring in 2010. George was a Rutherford Little League Coach and for a time served as League President. He also coached Rutherford Recreational Basketball, including the 1994 State Champs. George was a dear friend and security advisor to the Rutherford Junior Football Program.
George found beauty in the simple things in life. He enjoyed talking with neighbors, doing the Daily News crosswords, spending time with family, watching old movies and television shows, and enjoying a good meal and seeing friends at Steve and Andrea’s and the Colonial Diner. George always made time to help others in any way he could and he loved and supported his community in so many ways.
George is predeceased by his brothers Richard and Robert. He will be greatly missed by his son George and wife Dawn, and son Jack and wife Allison. His grandchildren, Jackson, Eva, and Ellie Mary will truly miss their beloved “Pop Pop”. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy O’Donnell and brother Edward as well many other friends and family.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions a service will be held on Monday February 22, 2021 at 9:45 am for Immediate Family only at the Macagna Diffily Onorato Funeral Home 41 Ames Ave., Rutherford, NJ. Interment will take place at Holy Cross cemetery, North Arlington, NJ at 11:00 am. Visitation on Sunday February 21, 2021 from 1-5PM. I remember our many discussions about world problems as we walked and jogged around Tryon Field. Although the conversations we’re unfit for prime Time consumption, they always ended with upside down and laughable conclusions.
You were an admirable servant and mentor to the Youth within the Rutherford community.Rest in peace, we miss you.

George. The Caldwell family will certainly miss you. We’ve been friends for 60 years. We grew up together from silly teenagers into mature adults (still sometimes silly when we would talk about our times together). You weren’t my brother by blood, but we acted like brothers and always watched out for one another. Through school and marriage and families, we watched them all grow together. I’m glad we had the fun and lifetime we had. Rest in peace, my friend. Give Fran a hug from us.

Great guy. Law enforcement professional, volunteer youth coach, friend and most importantly a great family man. Loved coaching with him, I learned a lot. He will be missed but not forgotten; especially for his sharp sense of humor and wit. Condolences to the entire Egbert family. Truly one of Rutherford's finest. And Jersey City's too.
