Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 3, 2008.
EAST ORLEANS — George M. Galloway Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, following a long illness.

Born on Nov. 28, 1914, he was a graduate of Bard College of Columbia University as well as the University of Michigan School of Business. He was senior vice president of the Reuben H. Donnelley Corp., on the board of St. Regis Paper, and ended his career as chairman of Donnelley's International in London, England.

Always interested in helping young people, he organized one of the first Little League baseball teams in his town of East Williston, Long Island, N.Y. In addition, he served for 12 years on the East Williston Board of Education and was a director of Junior Achievers in New York. The Galloways were long-time residents of Old Westbury, Long Island before his transfer to London. They have lived in East Orleans for 32 years.

George was a Mason for 50 years and served on both the Boards of Trustees and Deacons at The Federated Church of Orleans.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Codet. George and Mary would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this summer. Other survivors include their sons, Peter of Cornelius, N.C., and George of Cove, Ore.; and their seven grandchildren, one of whom is Lt. Cmdr. David Galloway, who recently returned from Iraq. There are also eight great-grandchildren and a niece, Joan Galloway. George was predeceased by his eldest son, John, and a brother Robert.

A memorial service for George Galloway will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m., at The Federated Church of Orleans.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, 255 Independence Drive, Hyannis, MA O2601.
