George Gowan Obituary

GOWAN, George Studebaker May 30, 1919 to July 23, 2006, passed away Sunday, July 23, at 3:15 p.m. at Mercy Medical Center in Mt. Shasta, CA. He leaves behind his wife Mildred Gowan who resides with her daughter and husband, Mary Ellen and Ernest Huff at Lake Shastina, CA. George was born in Anderson Valley, in Mendocino Co., CA, where he lived most of his life and was a long-time member of IOOF, the Rebekah Lodge, the Lions Club, the Farm Bureau and the A.V. Grange. During World War II, George worked at the shipyard at Mare Island. Later, he was self-employed as a logger, lathe mill owner/operator. He also maintained fire roads for the Masonite Corp., he was a Trustee of the A.V. Cemetery District, and a member of the Philo Methodist Church. For many years George and Mildred sold their fruit and vegetables at farmers markets in the valley and on the Mendocino coast. Besides his wife and stepdaughter, he is survived by his son George E. Gowan of Anderson Valley, stepson James Triplett and wife Pat (Cook) of Chico, CA. William Triplett, Mildred's oldest son, preceded him in death in 1980. George leaves behind 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. George's older sisters - Lucille, Bernice and Mary preceded him. He is survived by his younger brother James and his wife, Jo, Gowan of Philo. A memorial service will be held at the Philo Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 13. Following the service George's ashes will be interred in the Shields Cemetery in Philo that overlooks the Gowan's former home. Memorial donations may be made to the Philo church.
