George Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 8 to Nov. 9, 2011.
Jones, George L. Age 85, of Edina, MN & Naples, FL, passed away on November 6, 2011. Preceded in death by daughter, Cynthia and his siblings. Remembered by many as the 16 year old who miraculously survived being struck by a train during a blizzard. He completed high school at West and received business degrees from the University of Minnesota and Cornell University. He began his career at Cargill and ultimately became President of the seed division which he grew into an international concern. George went on to become the Chairman and CEO of Northrup King. He received many honors in international business and served as the Director of the U.S. Feed Grain Council where he was instrumental in opening trade relations behind the 'Iron Curtain'. He was President of the American Seed Trade and Western Seed Associations. He will be remembered most by his friends and associates for his humility, quick wit and dry sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, tennis and card games. He belonged to Edina, Minikahda, and Royal Poinciana Country Clubs and was a member of the Minneapolis Club, Alpha Delta Phi, Gyros, GOBs, Ham & Eggs, MEO, YPO, and 49ers. His preferred "club" was his home, made special by his sweetheart and wife of 65 years Carol Jean McCullough Jones. He is also survived by his children, J. Scott Jones (Bonnie), Tom (Trish) Jones, Nancy Jones, Karen (Scott) Wooldridge; grandchildren, Heather (Chad) Seiler, Thomas, Andrew and Sarah Jones, Claire and Grace Wooldridge; great-grandsons, Chadwick and Scotty Seiler. A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 11, 1:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Edina, 4439 West 50th Street. Reception to follow. Many thanks to Sunrise for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the Children's Cancer Research Fund (7301 Ohms Lane, Suite 460, Minneapolis, MN 55439).
