When I was working as a trainee in the Right of Way Department at the County of Orange, I took 4 appraisal courses over two years at Orange Coast College. Fortunately, the instructor was a man named George Hamilton Jones. That's how I met George. He was a great teacher, and his classes were highly influential in my decision to become an appraiser.
After I left the County, I kept in touch with George now and then. I was getting work where I could with other appraisers. One day I got a call from George, and he asked me to do a sales search for him. I completed that one, and it led to several others. He apparently liked my work because he asked me to move into his upstairs office on Via Lido and pretty much work with him full-time. Of course, I happily accepted.
Eventually, we moved to the offices across the street above the bank. I had my own office with a view. I shared it with Dick Fuller, who was there for a while.
As the business grew, he hired Bob Raymond. When he incorporated, he made us employees with a salary and a percentage of the business's gross income. Bob spent most of his off time taking courses and studying to become an MAI. I think he did it for about a year and was gone. He hired Bill Hansen at about that time.
Everyone wanted to get the MAI designation and go "out on your own." George was a great training ground for MAI's. I think at one point, there were 15 or more who had worked for George and got the designation.
He was undoubtedly the most influential person in my life. I sincerely enjoyed every minute of the times spent with George in the field and at his desk. He would think and write on the yellow legal pad with a pencil. He used a pencil so he could erase and correct. Primitive but effective.
He was a great mentor, teacher, and friend.
There must be a sailboat in heaven. Happy sailing with your sweetheart Sug!!

I worked in George´s real estate appraisal office between 1965-1970. It was a time in my life that I reflect on with great fondness. George embodied quality work, impeccable ethics and sound reasoning, which he passed on to his associates.
We had some excellent real estate appraisers in Southern California but George was the best. To be known as one of "George´s Boys" was a mark of distinction. George not only tutored many of us but when we established our own offices he was not only a willing sounding board for difficult appraisal assignments but he referred jobs to us during our careers.
In my 85 years, I´ve known many people in my life but George just seemed to have it all: intelligence, ethics, sailor, 100 years of life, 75 year marriage to Sug, Balboa Island bay front home, Stanford education, a terrific son in Casey and incredible good looks( a cross between Gary Grant and Randolph Scott).
Speaking for all of us who you mentored through the years, I would say thank you George for everything. You were the best.
God´s speed.
