LINDER _ George 1926 - 2002 It is with deep sadness that the family of George Linder FCA, beloved husband of Dorothy Linder, announces his passing. George's life ended on Sunday, July 28, 2002 at the age of 76 years, claimed finally by the cancer he had battled for almost fifteen years. He faced his illness as he lived his life, with quiet courage and a determination that endured, frequently against the odds, until the end. George was born in London, England to Norman and Edith Linder (nee Schaffer) on January 19, 1926. He grew up mostly in England and joined the British Army late in World War II, serving tours of duty in India, Burma and Singapore. After the war, he immigrated with his brother John to Montreal, scene of happy childhood memories. In Montreal, he earned a B.A. in Political Science and a
B.Comm. from Sir George Williams University, and met his future wife and lifetime partner, Alice Dorothy Boyd. The couple married in 1953 and lived for a time in England and then in Montreal, before driving across the country with first-born son David to join Dorothy's parents in Calgary. From the beginning, George loved Calgary and the mountains. He and Dorothy made it their home and raised their family of four sons here. He worked in the caterpillar tractor industry and the oil business, then served almost ten years at the University of Calgary in the Faculty of Continuing Education. He was a life-long learner and achieved his Chartered Accountant's designation in 1967, and completed an MBA from Michigan State University while with the U of C. For several years, he was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education and Director of the Management Development program. In 1979, he joined Deloitte Haskins & Sells, where he became a partner and developed a management consulting practice. George was a risk-taker, who several times walked away from lifetime security to embark on a new and more interesting challenge. In 1986, George was honoured to become a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. George enjoyed his work, the fellowship of his colleagues, and also his longtime volunteer involvement with the United Way and Care West, serving several years with the National Board of the United Way of Canada. He retired in 1988 to spend time hiking, skiing, traveling and golfing with Dorothy. For many years George was a member of the Glencoe Club and the Glencoe Golf and Country Club, as well as the Week End Hikers and West Winds Outdoor Club. His sense of humour, quiet strength, empathy, walking your own path, these gifts are his legacy to us, and it is with love and respect we acknowledge them and mourn his loss. George is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by Dorothy; his four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Corinne, Michael and Anne, Peter and Elizabeth, and Marty and Rosa. Grandpa George is also missed by Matthew, Kyla and Austin, the grandchildren he adored. A private family Service was held at Queen's Park Cemetery on Wednesday, July 31, 2002.
