LONG, DR. GEORGE, born October 13, 1914 in Cullman, AL, died April 8, 2005 in Winter Haven, FL. Dr. Long grew up in south Alabama in the rural community of Foley. He graduated from Foley High School where he served as the Captain of the Varsity Football Team. He attended Auburn University from 1935 until 1940 and graduated in Veterinary Medicine as an honor student. George was a boxer on the Auburn University Boxing Team. He married Maxie Floyd on May 6, 1941. They were married for 64 years. They have two children, Carol Harwell and her husband, Charlie, who live in Tulsa, OK and Terry Long and his wife, Sharon, who live in Fort Meade, FL. They have nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Dr. Long practiced veterinary medicine in Winter Haven, FL for seven years before relocating to Orlando in 1947. He owned and operated a veterinary hospital for 35 years before retiring to New Smyrna Beach, FL. After 10 years at New Smyrna, he and his wife, Maxie, relocated to Polk county in December of 2001 to live next to their son, Terry. Dr. Long was an avid reader, he was also a writer for the Orlando Sentinel under the alias name Palmetto Pete, and loved to sketch animals. Dr. Long loved all animals from parakeets to buffalo, he even owned a pair of buffalo named The Hawk Brothers, Tommy and Moe. Dr. Long was a member of the Young Republicans, a member of the Rotary Club, a state officer for the Lion's Club, President of the Colonial Town Association, and a member of the National Writers' Club. Dr. Long became a Christian in 1978 and was baptized along side his granddaughter, Tosha Harwell at Calvary Assembly Church in Winter Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1- 2PM. Funeral Service will follow in the chapel at 2PM on Wednesday, with Rev. John Keen, officiating.
