One of the first people to welcome us to our new home was a kind gentleman across the street named George. He became a fixture in our lives, always waving and shouting a greeting as our family ambled by his house on our way to swim classes or the library or school. He was ready with a bowl of treats for the girls each Halloween and greeted us with his warm smile and the offer of “a wee nip” when we came by Christmas carolling. Any other time we stopped to chat he would regale us with quips about his “girlfriends', the home assistance staff that popped by each day. I would point to George every Remembrance Day to reinforce to my daughters that people made great sacrifices in order for us to enjoy the freedom we have today. I regret that I didn't take George up on his offers of “a wee nip” more often and, like the rest of my family, I miss him. George Mackay was the sort of person every neighbourhood needs, a gentleman with a wee bit of rascal in him.

To Alison & Ross and families our thoughts are with you all at this time. Thinking of George and Joyce brings back many happy memories that will never be forgotten and will always be treasured. We may be far away across the big pond but our memories bring us closer.
