George Marcou Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2023.
George Aresti Marcou, 93, passed away at his home in Norfolk, Virginia on Friday, April 21, 2023.

George was born in Yeroskipos, Paphos, Cyprus on February 15, 1930 to Arestis and Artemis Marcou. After graduating from high school, he worked as an accountant and, later, landed a government job with the postal service; however, he pictured a brighter future for himself. He married the love of his life, Antigoni, on October 19, 1952, and in January of the following year they boarded the U.S.S. Constitution and sailed to New York. With the help of Antigoni's uncle, Charles Nicholas, they settled in Norfolk, Virginia. George joined the army in 1955. After serving his time in the army he joined the National Guard and happily worked in a job he loved for over 30 years, rising in the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, until retiring in 1988.

George and Antigoni found a community for life at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. George was an enthusiastic member of the Golden Years Club and in his younger years, a volunteer for the Greek Festivals and an active participant of the Cyprus Benevolent Society.

George was an entrepreneur from a young age: In Cyprus, at age 13, he raised enough money to buy his parents a home. He loved dabbling in the stock market and kept his mind active with this interest. George was proud of his Cypriot heritage but even more proud of his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, and Papou, and he will be dearly missed.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Antigoni Marcou, and his sisters, Yiannoulla Athenodorou and Eleftheria Iacovidou.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother Andrikos Markides; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Michos and Dr. John Michos; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Michael Marcou and Starr Marcou; and his son, Andy Marcou and fiancee Celena Horton. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Dr. Aristides Michos and his wife Jennifer, Dr. George Michos, Katherine Michos, Michael Marcou, Alexander Marcou, Catherine Marcou, Helen Marcou, and many beloved nieces and nephews who reside in Cyprus and Greece.

A Trisagion service will be held on Sunday, April 30th at 3:30pm at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home in Norfolk. The funeral service will be conducted at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. and will be officiated by Rev. George Bessinas. George will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a memorial donation to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

A wonderful man and a great teacher. He served many years together with Stephen in the Army NG and his name has been mentioned numerous times as Steve reminisced fondly about his experiences in the National Guard and George's family. Our deepest sympathy to his family. Ellyn & Stephen Chapel Sgm USA (Ret)

George was a good man and a family friend. We have fond memories of family gatherings at holidays at one another´s homes. We will remember Antigone and George.
