MERRILLDr. George Jackson Merrill, age 70 years, of Pioneer Ridge, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, May 30, 2002. Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, he attained his undergraduate degree from Boston University followed by his PHD at the University of Birmingham in England. In 1963, he moved to Port Arthur where he taught Shakespeare at Lakehead University for thirty two years, retiring in 1995.Dr. Merrill took great interest and pride in the endeavours of his 4 children, whom he always spoke very highly of. He volunteered much of his time as a member of the Cambrian Players Theatre Group and as President of the Port Arthur Continental Little League, where he watched his children play baseball. He was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed collecting stamps, travelling and gardening. He was exceptionally generous in his charitable donations.Dr. Merrill will be sadly missed by two sons: Glenn (Cindy) of Thunder Bay, Brian (Lisa) of Winnipeg, MB; two daughters: Michelle (Stephen) Oikonen of Winnipeg, MB, Lisa Merrill of Thunder Bay; three grandchildren: Kennedy, Kaitlyn and Jackson Merrill. Also surviving are other relatives in Massachusetts and the New England area. He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Mildred Merrill.Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 8th, at 11:00 a.m. in Westminster United Church, 650 River St. , officiated by Rev. Susan Ivany and Rev. David Sparks. Interment at a later date. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, June 7th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. If friends so desire, donations may be made in memory of Dr. George Jackson Merrill to Westminster United Church or to the Alzheimer's Society of Thunder Bay."
