George was a huge personality in our village and an even bigger one for our scout group. We found we had a common bond as he and Betty were married in the church in Streatham Common where my mum ran the Sunday School and I attended for many year. He regaled our scouts with tales of guiding the planes home during WW2 as a scout on the roof of warehouses at Croydon airport, very close to where I lived!
George was the link across three generations in our village ensuring that the young people in our scout group viewed the elderly people around them as friends' and we're there to be chatted with, helped and respected. He was a very special, one of a kind gentleman and we will miss Gorgeous George, as he was affectionately known to us all, greatly.

Gorgeous George as he was know by the young people of my scout troop will be sadly missed, over my ten years as the scout leader George and I became good friends, he was a strong supporter of our scout group he came to all of our cobblers Christmas parties that he helped organise and was a favourite of the scout. We together ran the cobblers garden fete a couple of times and he came and spoke to the scouts on several occasions about the war when as a scout himself in Croydon he would work the search light at the airport and when we did our age awareness week he had the scouts in stiches with is anecdotes of old age problems, from his dancing to his infectious laugh he was so much younger than his years, probably why we got on so well!
I will miss having a cup of tea with you my friend and will think of you when I am scouting.
