George Naylor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 7 to Mar. 8, 2007.
NAYLOR, Dr. George Charles In loving memory of Dr. George Charles Naylor, born May 24, 1930, who died on March 2, 2007. George is survived by: his wife of 33 years, Donna; her family; his daughters; Heather (Rick) Matthews, Jennifer Naylor and his two grandchildren James and Hayley Matthews. George was born in Scarborough, England. He excelled academically in his school years and was passionate about music. He completed his two years of military service prior to graduating from the Royal College of Music in London. He married Thelma and ventured to Canada to teach at Mount Allison University, N.B. and then at Dalhousie University, N.S. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces and returned to England to train as a Band Director at the Royal Military School of Music (Kneller Hall). Subsequently he was posted to Edmonton as the Director of Music for the PPCLI and remained in Canada from that time forward becoming a viola player with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and completing graduate studies. He had an extremely active music career in the Edmonton and surrounding community playing wind instruments, conducting, arranging and contracting musical events. George learned to pilot small aircraft and was thrilled at the exhilarating experience of flying. He remarried and completed his Doctorate at the University of Alberta. George was seconded with a group of doctoral classmates to create Grant MacEwan Community College. He took great pride in launching the innovative Division of Performing and Design Arts, of which he was the Director/Dean for over 20 years before retiring to Victoria in 1996. He returned to Edmonton in 2006 for his final flight to "slip the surly bonds of Earth" and Alzheimer's disease. A time to celebrate George's life will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at the Community of Christ, 6919 - 83 Street. Donations may be made to "World Accord" c/o the Community of Christ or to the Canadian Red Cross. Serenity Funeral Service, 5311-91 Street, 450-0101. I have very fond memories of George. In the late seventies and early 1980s he would drive down from Edmonton on Monday evenings to conduct the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, and I was one of the cellists.. He was a wonderful director - very talented and with a great sense of humour, which he needed at times. I appreciate his commitment to our little orchestra. It was especially important to my late dad, Leonard Moorhouse, who also played cello. Mondays were the highlight of the week for him. I just came across this obit after finding an old newspaper article about George at my late mum’s house.
