Mr. George Edward "Skip" Prosser

It is with great honor that The "Skip Prosser Classic" will be held this winter between Prosser's two high school coaching stops, Linsly and Wheeling Central on January 26th 2017. This game is intended to not only preserve then name of Coach Prosser, but also to establish a scholarship fund in his name for both prep schools. Prosser was an outstanding example of integrity, work ethic, and fair play. His legacy continues, not only at major colleges, but on the prep level where he began to spin his magic. His influence to people like me and so many others still lives. His memory is something I am so very thankful for. I was so fortunate to cross paths with him in life. We are hoping this "Classic" continues for years to come. Skip Prosser was a tremendous human being who got more out of people than anyone could imagine, including myself.

Hey Skipper! I am enjoying setting up my Christmastime drive from Florida to Winchester, VA to Cincinnati, OH via Rock Hill, SC. I want to see the Winthrop Eagles play and see Mark and Pat in action. It's at home against Wofford so there is added potential drama in the house. I will do my best to forward the initiative to produce the legacy film I am inspired to make. With this country and the world in a moral spiraling nose-dive, the people need stories and individuals that bring hope, light and love. Thanks for you reassuring guidance that this will manifest some how even in the personnel muck and mire it appears to be stuck in. I ask for your help by placing a little extra wind in my sails as I attend the next iteration of the Skip Prosser Classic between Wake and Xavier. At this time I am ultra sensitive to indications given to speak clearly, truthfully and articulate well what I am trying to accomplish. I hope to meet influential people in Cincy and will come away with renewed strength and vision. I know that I will tip a few pints on your behalf at Hap's with those there that are very fond of you. In advance, I say 'Cheers and Thanks' to you. I hope little Declan contains a lot of the positive gifts you were blessed with and the heart, mind and energy to serve others with them. For him alone, I want to make this film. Pax.

Greetings Skipper! On this special day I'm thinking of you as I work late in the editing room. Thanks for your occasional indications of how to proceed with sharing your story for the highest good of others. I remain enthusiastic that with your high-level guidance, all the pieces will come together whereby your inspirational story can be shared with an audience that needs it. Regardless, I am so honored and blessed to have known you since the days you attended Kings Point and being your guest at your last ACC victory over Georgia Tech in the conference tournament in Tampa. I guess your last win was over in Kuwait at Operation Hardware. It's fitting to learn that you shared that you got more out of the experience than that of the soldiers. What a great example of receiving more than one gives! From what your military team has said about meeting and playing for you in that short time is nothing short of amazing. Go figure! Thanks for being such a positive beacon of light to help us all find our ways and be the very best we can be. Having known you and to find out quite a bit more having interviewed so many people now, my life's path is better lit. Peace be with you Skip wherever you may be at this time.

Hey Skip! Thinking of you this late Sunday morning as the Deacs head to Duke for a very pivotal game this evening. Your authentic friendship with Dino shows in his winning ways and his focus on 'the kids'. You have passed such benevolence forward and now we must take our 'ability to respond' similarly in a caring and kind 'response-able' manner. I hope you can enjoy tonight's victory.

I grew up watching Wake Forest basketball as a kid and teenager. Starting back with Tim Duncan but when I grew older in my early teens Skip became the coach of the Demon Deacons. I worked hard through school and tried my hardest for so many years to go to Wake Forest to meet Skip because I thought he was a great man. It was a two weeks before I sent off my early application to Wake that Skip passed away. I'm sad that as I am a Wake Forest student today that I will never truly know the man that was so great not only to the Wake Forest Nation but to everyday people in everyday situations in his everyday life. Skip Prosser embodies everything that I want to be as a person...honest, humble, witty, open-minded. It's because of Skip that I've tried so hard to get to where I am today and that I will continue to try hard everyday for the rest of my life.

Thank you Skip for what you've done for me, you never knew me and I never knew you, but I hope that someday we can meet.

Well Skip; it's been a year now and we all still miss you!!! I don't think Demon Deacon Basketball will ever be quite the same without you. You are and will always be forever in our Hearts. God Speed my Friend!!!!

It has been one year ago today that Skip Prosser has died. I cant believe it and am still in shock over everything. I miss not seeing his leadership on the court and know that the wake forest teams from here on out will play with more heart and strength since this has happened. RIP Skip I will miss you dearly

Skip and my husband Henry started their teaching and coaching careers together at Linsley Military Institute in 1972. Skip went on to coach college basketball and Henry coached high school football. He was always so excited to hear about Skip's successes and would say, "hey I knew that guy when…" He was very excited to follow his career. So both of our guys loved coaching and did a great job. Henry and Skip started their careers together and ironically, both ended their careers at the same time. My husband Henry passed away one week before Skip, under the same circumstances, a totally unexpected cardiac arrest with no prior symptoms. We have three adult children, 2 boys and a girl. If anyone can empathize and understand your pain, we certainly can. Please know how sorry we are that you have had to go through this. I guess all we can do is take one day at a time. It'll be a year come July that we lost coach Prosser. Everytime I think of Wake Forest, I think of him. Coach Prosser was more than just a basketball coach. He was a friend. I am now up north at Villanova for grad school, and I have never once seen Jay Wright on campus. Nor could I pick him out of a line-up. But just about everyday while at Wake I saw Coach Prosser- whether it was in front of the Pit or in the Miller Center, he was there.

In the long run, the game of basketball seems so trivial. Yes, Coach led us to some great wins and the NCAA Sweet Sixteen- but I don't remember him for that. I remember Coach Prosser for who he was as a person, and what he gave back to the Wake Forest community- which is far greater than some wins. I miss Coach Prosser dearly, and although I was never close to him, he holds a very special place in my heart.

We love and miss you, Coach. May you rest in peace.

Nancy..i met you when we were on jury duty several years ago..we spoke as nurses having a common bond..I did not know your husband but my heart and prayers went out to you when his untimely death occured.. now i am in the same situation...any advice from you on how i function would be appreciated..

When Coach Prosser passed away I read Seth Davis' article in SI.com. He related a story when the Coach and he were walking to lunch and some Wake students said hello and stated, "beautiful day". Coach Prosser responded, "it's always a beautiful day in the forest of Wake." Last Thursday, in route to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, my wife and I walked around campus. It was a sunny day (in contrast to the next three cloudy days). All I could remember was, "its always a beautiful day in the forest of Wake". And then on Saturday, when Riley Skinner hit a couple of long passes, I thought of another Skipism, when he would tell Coach Grobe, "when in doubt, go deep."

I miss you Skip. Wake basketball games are just not the same without seeing you on the sidelines.

I had the honour of meeting Coach Prosser a couple of times, more recently when he came to Scotland to hold basketball coaching clinics. He was such a passionate coach and a real credit to the game of basketball but more than that he was a genuine and fun guy to be around. My thoughts go out to his family and to all who will miss him dearly.

Never having the opportunity to meet Mr Prosser, I have had the opportunity to talk to many fellow Carnegie(ans)who knew Mr. Prosser well, and talked what a great person he truly was. I am going to present to Carnegie Borough to have a Skip Prosser Day. If anyone deserved such a recommendation it truly should be Skip Prosser! Reading all of the condolences and thoughts about Skip show what a great guy he was. I had him for history class at Wheeling Central Catholic HS and have watched him with pride ever since. It's a terrible loss to the students at WF who will miss out on his leadership in life and basketball.

GOD has finally chosen A MAN WITH THE ULTIMATE IN CLASS, INTEGRITY AND CHARACTER. I am sure SKIP was chosen by GOD on purpose. I think GOD wants to win Basketball Games, and has asked Skip to be his Head Coach.

We shall always remember Coach Skip Prosser and his wife, Nancy, setting with us in the rain at Oxford, Mississippi last year watching the Deacons defeat Ole Miss. This was an indication of what kind of person he was. Also, Mrs. Nancy Prosser shall always be a part of the Wake Forest family.

It has taken me a while to come to this point. Since Coach Prosser died I have been reading the tributes here and I havenot been able to understand the profound sadness I have felt. It is far deeper than would be expected by the death of almost any person that I have not met. And yet, it is there. After reading through the tributes several times, many of those tributes by students that I knew in my time at Wake, I began to understand. The outpouring is not just because a good man has died before his time. Skip Prosser was more to us than a good and caring man or a great basketball coach. Skip Prosser embodied all that we love about Wake Forest. We who are alumni, or students, or parents understand that Wake Forest has a place in our hearts that is beyond explanation. To me – to us – Wake represents a boldness of vision and purity of purpose underpinned with unimpeachable character. That was Skip Prosser. He was Ed Wilson or Ed Christman in basketball shoes. He was Wake Forest.

I met Coach a couple of years ago at a fundraiser. He was very kind and took time to speak with so many people when they all wanted a chance to meet him. Each person seemed important to him. It was amazing when I saw him 3 months later and he remembered my name. Such a class act. His presence will be greatly missed, his absence greatly felt, but the memories will last forever. Grace and peace to the family.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well-lived.

My condolences to Skip's wife and to Mark and Scott. It was a pleasure to have been able to spend time teachging with Skip and having Mark and Sott in class. They were all gentlemen. Skip was a first rate teacher and a dedicated coach. I can think of few people who worked as hard as he and Dino did. He deserves every accolade and credit he received. I know those of us who spent time with him at Wheeling Central will surely miss him.

I remember him as a teacher first, from wheeling central catholic. Wow, just hard to believe. My condolences to his family.

I met Coach when myself and some of my coaching collegues decided while at a Duke Clinic we would make a visit to Wake Forest. Being with two people that knew Skip from their five star days he immediately invited us all into his war room with his assistant coaches. Instead of worrying about the interview he had to get ready for on ESPN he was more concerned with a bunch of high school coaches. Skip was truly one of the good guys in the profession and will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to the Prosser family and the Wake Forest community. Please know that those of us who love Wake Forest and are holding you close to our hearts and in our prayers...my Demon Deacon flags flew in Rockingham as a tribute to Skip.

I met Coach Prosser at a coaching clinic and he spent a few minutes answering my questions afterword. He was very respectful of high school coaches and I appreciated the time he spent with me. I admired how he climbed through the coaching ranks. I also had the priviledge of attending a practice in 2003 at WFU and he was very welcoming. His family is in my prayers.

I had the privilege of meeting Skip at a Scouting banquet a few years back, and just last year at Borders in Winston-Salem. He was such a personable individual, and took the time to smile and say "hi". Your family is in my prayers during this difficult time!

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow.

No one can understand the real significance of the loss of such a leader and well respected coach and person like Coach Prosser. But, to move on in his memory and with all the fundamentals and aspirations he had in place would be the greatest tribute to the man and the university he represented than anything that currently is being considered. The best Wake Forest can be and the athletes Coach Prosser had in place, and assembled for the future, is truly what this great man would hope to see as the greatest tribute to his legacy and to him as a role model.

Deepest sympathy to Nancy who was the love of Skip's life. I remember standing with Skip after a basketball banquet when he looked across the room at Nancy and said, "Isn't she beautiful? Don't you just love her?" Skip's face would light up at just the mention of her name.

It is hard to believe that Skip is gone. I have known Skip since my days as a college student at Xavier and then in my current career. As a student, a friend of mine and I wanted to start up midnight madness when Skip became head coach. He was so excited about the event and he thanked us for making the event happen. From my very first meeting with Skip, he defined what it meant to be of the utmost character. He was a man of faith, integrity and had a hell of a sense of humor. It was one year to the day of his passing I met with coach in his office. He spent more than two hours with me at lunch, givng me a tour of Wake's beautiful campus and asking me how things were back in Cincinnati. I will be there on Saturday to say good bye to one of the BEST people to walk this earth. I will have Nancy, Scott, Mark, JB, Kels, and Dino in my prayers. Skip will always be a Deamon Deacon and Musketeer forever.

I have been a Wake Forest fan for almost 20 years. What a shocking and significant loss to the Wake Forest Community! It is very hard to comprehend that he is gone--never to be seen court side again. I too met him at the Loop and he was such a nice person. I hate he is no longer with us, but cherishing our memories of him will go on forever and live on. His spirit will always be with us on and off the court. My deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Prosser Family--during this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

There simply aren't enough people like Skip Prosser. He captured my respect the first time I met him at a parents council luncheon where he answered my question about how he recruited against the big schools. His answer, "We're not looking for the same kid", and further explanation about academics, character and the overriding importance of a college degree - placed him in a higher category than a basketball coach. It is clear that everyone he touched knows how special he was. My daughter Betsy says everyone feels as though they lost an uncle. He was that special.

From one cabdriver here in Charlotte: Being from Winston-Salem and a Wake fan, you will be missed on the court and out in the community. It was great meeting you at the Loop.

Here are some photographs I took at the momentus victory over UNC at the Joel that tell a story about Skip. I treasure the commemerative tee shirt layed out on every seat before the game. It will always be a great way to remember Coach Prosser.

I have known Skip since he was 19 years old and a plebe (freshman) at Kings Point. This priviledged position was the result of my brother being a plebe attending USMMA as well. We lived in NYC near the Academy at the time and on short weekends and an occasional day off, Skip would stay at our house since traveling to Pittsburgh was not realistic. He was a kind and generous Spirit then as he was last March when he made available to me tickets to the ACC Tournament in Tampa, FL., some 37 years later. After handing a streaking Georgia Tech team a decisive blow in round 1, Skip took a break from watching 'tape' of his next opponent's first round game and decided to join some of his close friends and family who were congregated in the hotel lobby bar. Skip wore his tough season via the well worn jogging suit he had slipped into looking comfortably tired. The patrons consisted of a large contingency of boisterous and disappointed Yellow Jacket fans. Skip more than sensed their presence and made sure he acknowledged them, shook the hands of those that knew integrity and kidded with them. A Coke or two later, when Skip got up and kissed his lovely wife Nancy and slowly made his way back to screen more game tape, the crowd burst into applause. You could tell he was a bit surprised as he turned back to take it in when to my left all of the Georgia Tech fans stood up in unison and cheered loudly, bolstering a chillingly authentic tribute to a pantheon level coach and even finer human being. As an incredibly humble man, Skip stepped slightly out of character to accept the appreciation and pointed at the Yellow Jacket fans and clapped for them as being true sports and an integral part of the ACC Men's Basketball community. The raised arm clapping, hooting and hollering remained intense and then grew into a deafening cresendo as Skip broke out into an ear-to-ear smile and backed out of the pub with his feet barely touching the lobby floor. The thunderous and well deserved applause continued until he was totally out of sight. Following this precious moment, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Who could have known that we all just celebrated Coach Skip Prosser's last win and a life filled with selfless service to others. Sitting at my computer at this moment in time, I am compelled to raise my hands and clap in honor of a man that left this world in a better state. To truly honor you Skip, I vow to reach out a little more and pass forward your positive, winning attitude, your non-judgemental ways and far-reaching mentorship. From where you see things now, I humbly ask for your guidance to help me make the choice to take appropriate action when presented. That's of course if you have the time from your likely new coaching assignment on a higher level. Peace be with you Nancy, Mark and Scott and all those close to you. Aho Mitakuye Oyasin!

However, I have another, and when we thought you were coming home to coach at Pitt the city was abuzz and I thought I would finally get to meet you. It was never to be. But I do know that you now walk with God and whenever I go home to carnegie I am going to see to it that the sign that greets vistors that says welcome to carnegie home of Honus Wagner is changed to Home of Honus Wagner and Skip Prosser, two fantastic sports figures but more importantly Good Men

I feel an extreme loss, like I lost a great friend. I feel honored to have known Skip for a few years through coaching and playing against one of his Xavier teams. He ALWAYS made you feel like you were important. He is truly one of the great ones. I was fortunate to have spoken to him on Wednesday in Orlando. My heartfelt condolences go out to The Prosser family, Nancy, Mark and Scott.

I've been an XU fan/alum for close to 50 yrs.Skip is at the top of my list .His appreciation of the student part of student athlete always made me proud to be an alum.His handling of the Sears/Rose situation before the Georgetown game is paradoxically for me one of my proudest memories as an XU fan.The Pittsburgh visit to Huggins was a teaching moment for me,and my grown children still quote back to me the on time aphorism. My thoughts and prayers are extended to his family

In this area you have to be a Wake Fan at heart. But Skip had a wonderful talent, with the boys he coached. Everyone will miss you Skip, even if we are Duke, Carolina or State Fans. Wake and Coach Prosser will always be #1 in this home town.

I moved here 2 years ago from Richmond, a couple months after Wake's heartbreaking NCAA loss to WVU in 2005. I took it for granted that I would eventually see a game at the coliseum with Coach prosser at the helm. It's just a reminder of how precious life is. I bleed as the saying goes--Carolina Blue---but I am one of the first to admit that I have admired Coach Prosser not only for his amazing talent as a basketball coach but also as a wonderful human being. I am a Southern Baptist and when WF hired him it was one of the best hires ever. Coach Prosser was to put it simply----A Class Act-- bar none! We will miss him also. You (both his home family and his basketball family) are in our prayers. We are so sorry for your loss, but we will see him again.

It was my honor to host Skip and his Wheeling Central Catholic basketball team to St. John's in Bellaire for a scrimmage. I followed his career to X.U. and through to the ACC. I will miss him.

I was tailgating at a Wake football game and saw Coach Prosser on a golf cart, 1 row over from where I was. I hollered "Coach can I get a picture of you". He replied "I'll stop by in a few minutes". Shortly he pulled up beside us and said "i'm ready for the picture". What a great man he was! He will be missed, but not Forgotten.

To the family and many friends of "Skip" I have learned so much about a man that I did not even Know in the last few days. He was a man of strength and moral character and I wish I could have met him. My sincere condolances go to the family and the Wake Forest family. Mr. Henry B. Day

The entire Dailer family mourns with you. We also remember all of the good times we had with Skip.It was a privilege to coach Scotty and Mark and a privilege to know that Skip was a friend. Megan and Erin both attended a nd graduated from Xavier because of Skip's guidance.

To the Prosser Family:
Our prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. Coach Prosser touched so many lives in this city and the country. Our son loved him so much. Coach Prosser would always call him Wake's #1 fan. We are so happy he attended Coach Prosser's Father & Son Camp. Those are precious memories we will hold dear to our hearts. God Bless you for sharing him with the world.

Coach Prosser will certainly be missed. He certainly made an impression on my son and myself when my son attended a weekend basketball camp for invited players several years ago. We were the first to arrive at the gym and Coach Prosser came strolling in and upon seeing us standing there immediately came over and started having a conversation with my son and myself. He had never met my son before but he talked to him like they had known each other for years. He was very encouraging to my son and made him feel very welcome at Wake Forest. They had a nice long chat and he made my son feel so special. I think my son, who is a staunch TarHeel supporter, became a Deacon fan that very day. Coach Prosser definitely made an impression, not only on my son, but also on me. He did not have to take the time to spend with my son, but he did. He did not have to say the things he said to my son, but he did. I think that was just the kind of man he was. He cares for kids. It is very evident by the way he is being remembered by his players, his assistant coaches, fellow colleagues in the coaching ranks, the administration at Wake Forest, and the entire Wake Forest family. He certainly inspired my son. I have been a high school coach for a long time now, and still have a passion for working with young people. I only hope that I have touched the lives of kids with half the passion that Coach Prosser has done. To his wife and family, I send my deepest condolences. Coach Prosser is an inspiration. I was employed with the University in the Information Services/multimedia division in 2003 and 2004. Our division was responsible for designing and installing the video editing bay in the Men's Basketball offices. One of my fondest memories of Skip was the day myself and our two student workers were laying on our backs under the desk console doing the wiring for the editing bay, and Skip stuck his head in the cubbyhole that would become the edit bay on the way to his office down the hall, and said "Now that's what I like to see! Men putting their backs into it!"... Skip's humor and graciousness will be greatly missed by all those that knew him.

SKIP WAS A TRUE GREAT PERSON HERE IN CINCINNATI AND WE ALL DO LOVE HIM AND WILL MISS HIS SMILE AND WE ALL DO SHARE IN THE LOSS.

Skip Prosser will always remain in the heart and soul of so many fans. He demonstrated professionalism in all phases of his coaching to athletes or students. A wonderful inspiration to all of us educators of young people. Thank you Skip and sincere thanks to Nancy for sharing him with us.

I went to grad school at Wake, and am a basketball fan. Whether we won or lost, Skip made me proud to be a Demon Deacon. What a great life he lived. Thank you.
