George F. Schluchterer, III, 89, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, in
Burlington, Vermont.
Born on July 29, 1935, in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, George grew up in Abington, where he developed a lifelong love of sports. A proud graduate of Abington High School's Class of 1953, he excelled at baseball and continued playing the sport during his college years at Susquehanna University. It was there, in 1954, that he met Janis-the love of his life. The two were married in 1957, just one week after graduating from Susquehanna.
George and Janis built their life together over the next 38 years in the suburbs of Philadelphia. During this time, George pursued a successful career as an accountant and auditor. He was also a devoted father to their three children-Jim, Jana, and Jeff-and took great joy in being actively involved in their lives. Whether coaching Little League baseball and ice hockey or driving Jana to and from the ice rink, George was always present with unwavering support and enthusiasm.
In the early 1980s, George discovered a new passion: golf. What began as a hobby quickly became a serious pursuit. He dedicated himself to the game with characteristic focus and eventually achieved an impressive four handicap. In the early 1990s, George and Janis retired to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina-a place that would become central to their retirement years. They also spent some time living in Venice, Florida, before returning to Hilton Head.
George's leadership skills and financial acumen were appreciated by many during his retirement. He served as President of golf clubs in Hilton Head and in Venice, earning respect for his calm demeanor and sharp mind. He also enjoyed working as a starter at Sea Pines Ocean and Sea Marsh courses-roles that allowed him to stay close to the game he loved while connecting with fellow golfers.
Beyond golf, George found fulfillment through service. He and Janis served together for many years as ushers at St. Luke's Church on Hilton Head Island-a reflection of their shared commitment to community and faith.
A year ago, George and Janis relocated to
Burlington, Vermont, to be closer to family. Though his time there was brief, it was filled with love and care.
George will be remembered for the ever-present twinkle in his eye, his kindness, warmth, and generous spirit. His legacy lives on through those who knew and loved him.
May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing. A Memorial Service will be held on June 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 50 Pope Avenue, Hilton Head Island.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Esther Project, St. Luke's Anglican, 50 Pope Ave., Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.
