Dr. George Strobel

George Strobel was my Masters Thesis Advisor in 1968-1970.

I am greatly sorrowed to hear of the loss of my advisor and friend. His passion for physics produced many interesting and unique problems, and I was privileged to have worked with him on several of these. He is and will always remain one of the key figures in my life.

Caroline, George, John and families. Melba and I send along our sincerest condolences. You are aware of the great respect and affection we have held for George and your family. We wish the best for you and stand ready to assist you in any way we can doing these difficult days and into the future.

Professor Dr. George L. Strobel was appointed Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Georgia in 1967 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Physics with tenure in 1973. He had earned a Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of Southern California, 1965, followed by about two years as a Research Associate at the University of California, Davis.

The University of Georgia, the city of Athens, Georgia and the state of Georgia were all beneficiaries of the intelligence, courage, kindness and humanity of this remarkable individual; teacher, professor, citizen and friend. Dr. Strobel was an engineer, a physicist and a very caring individual who would go to great lengths to think of others and provide help to them in many ways.

I first met George at a meeting of the American Physical Society in Washington, D.C. in 1966, when he was being considered for employment at the University of Georgia. I have sat on many committees with him, taught classes with him, wrote a paper for the Physical Review on Quarks with him, sat at his dinner table with him and his wonderful wife, Caroline and wonderful family and joined him when he courageously and unselfishly spoke up about injustice to others.

Once in about 1970, when one of his students was having financial difficulty, Dr. Strobel donated $200.00 of his personal funds, donated anonymously through the trust division of the university, to provide financial aid for this Ph.D. graduate student. How many other professors would do that?

Professor Strobel unselfishly performed many thankless tasks, like being secretary for the tenured faculty of the physics department for many years. He was extremely versatile as an engineer, theoretical physicist, writing papers on a host of subjects from elementary particle theory, nuclear physics, astro physics and many others.

He and his wonderful wife, Caroline, often invited all members of the physics department to their home, often for breakfast, and sought to unify an often divided department.

Thank you George for making the University of Georgia, Athens Clarke County, Georgia and the State of Georgia, a better place.

Jackie and I offer our condolences to John and his family during this time as well.

In the 5 years I have worked in the Physics & Astronomy Dept. I learned that Dr. Strobel was a most genuine person. I am glad to have known him, and I will miss him. My thoughts are with the family.

Caroline and family, we are thinking of you all at this most difficult time. You know how deeply we loved and admired George.

He was a most thoughtful and caring person...we shall always cherish our memories being with George and you at the football games and the memorable times shared at the bridge table. We wish you strength, courage and peace at this sad time.

You were so gracious and supportive of George during his fight with

cancer.
