George Mitchell Walters Jr.

Dear Ann and family......I worked with George at the James L. Martin Insurance Agency back in the late 80's. George was an awesome colleague there, and I always enjoyed all the time we were able to work together on various projects! He was just the nicest, most congenial fellow, and I know how much he loved his family, as we talked about that a lot! I am so sorry to learn of his passing, but trust that he has left an incredible legacy of kindness and community service to all the folks in Naples! I met George in the 7th grade when he was assigned as my mentor through the Take Stock in Children Scholarship Program. At the time, I was academically fortunate, but there was so much work needed in the realm of personal development. It was an understatement to say that I was incredibly shy, far too nervous to even tell George that I wanted the buffalo chicken sandwich from Subway when he asked what I wanted for our weekly lunches at school. But sure enough, he eventually got it out of me, and each buffalo chicken sub came with an invaluable lesson based on his own lived experiences. George was many things, but to name a few, he was a family man, an accomplished banker, a proud veteran, a passionate soccer coach, a Man of Distinction recognized for his contributions in the community. As my mentor, he was there to teach me how to absolutely smash my first interview for volunteering at the local hospital and how to speak publicly with confidence. He found me a personal tennis coach when I expressed the slightest interest in playing for my high school team. He constantly advocated for me behind the scenes, always looking out for opportunities that could benefit me. He networked with doctors so that I could secure my first shadowing experiences and begin building my professional portfolio. I had completely given up on applying to the Gates Millennium Scholarship-admittedly it was a mix of being lazy and telling myself that I wouldn´t get it anyway-and when George found out, he simply didn´t take no for answer. Needless to say, I involuntarily typed out those 9 essays and went on to actually win the dang thing. I couldn´t believe it, but that day, George made an eternal believer out of me. After I graduated high school, George extended his mentorship to my little siblings, until one by one they graduated too. But that never stopped George. He was my biggest supporter. He was always involved, always aware of the upcoming milestones and the impending obstacles. And most recently, he marked the calendars and made sure to reach out and wish me luck before my US medical licensing exam. I´ll forever be grateful for George, as I am literally the man I am today because of him. He was more than a mentor-he was family, and he will be so sorely missed. Thank you for everything, George.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Ann and the entire Walter´s family. George´s tireless contributions to the entire Naples community was an inspiration to many. Having served on several Not-For-Profit boards with George was a privilege and also a lesson in how to give back to your community. His legacy is a man who gave to others without any expectations of a return. He will be sorely missed.

My deepest sympathies to George´s family. He talked of you often and loved you all dearly. George was a principled man who worked tirelessly on behalf of others in the causes he so strongly believed. I admired him and will long remember him.
