Georgia Twitty Bowick

Huntsville - Mrs. Georgia Leona (Twitty) Bowick, 86, formerly of North Augusta, crossed over to Glory on July 28, 2024, after a brief illness.

Georgia attended North Augusta High School with the Class of '55. A majorette for the Yellowjackets, Georgia starred in several local car commercials before marrying (soon-to-be) Dr. Louis Albert Bowick, Jr., of Augusta.

Georgia came from humble roots. She picked peaches, pears, and cotton at the Family Farm on Five Notch Road-like all good Whatleys in those days did. She still visited the old farm (and ever-scattering family) even when Augusta-and Aiken County-were far behind her.

Georgia was an ardent Alabama football fan long before she ever set foot on UofA campus. By 1975, however, she was a mother of four-and a college freshman at the University of Alabama. In 1981, she graduated with bachelor's degrees in both English and Political Science. When Georgia said, "Roll Tide!" she really meant it.

Fifty years after high school, however, Georgia found her true calling. As an ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor in Huntsville, Ala., she excelled in her field, proudly welcoming students from more than 70 countries.

Motherhood, however, was Georgia's crowning role, and her life's proudest achievement. Nothing in this world brought Georgia greater joy than her children.

Georgia is preceded in death by her father, Russell Williamson Twitty; her mother, Mary Semple Whatley (Twitty) Tompkins; and her former husband, Dr. L.A. Bowick, Jr. She is survived by her four children: Stephen Murphy Bowick, Ann Bowick Owen (Rick), John Charles "J.C." Bowick (Leigh Anne), and Jean Marie Bowick; four grandchildren: Andrew Helms Bowick, Lauren Ayn Jacobs Lusk (Jeremy), David Ian Jacobs, and David Clay Bowick; and two great-grandchildren: Theodore Anton "Teddy" Lusk and Amelia Gertrude "Trudy" Lusk.

A graveside service for Georgia will be held on Saturday, June 14, at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m., with a gathering of all guests to follow.
