Gerald Childrey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 22, 2025.
Gerald Lee Childrey, 78, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Born on November 4, 1946, in Atlanta, Georgia, Gerald lived a life marked by deep devotion to his family, a sharp intellect, and a passion for the things he loved most.

Gerald was a proud graduate of Decatur High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Georgia. He later received his Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School. His professional journey reflected his commitment to justice and care for others. Among his many roles, he was especially proud of his time as the onsite worker's compensation adjuster at the General Motors Plant in Doraville, Georgia-a position that allowed him to advocate for workers and make a meaningful impact.

A long-time member of Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church, Gerald found strength and community through his faith. His life was grounded in love-especially for his wife of 46 years, Brenda Childrey. Gerald often described himself as a lucky man to have Brenda and their family by his side.

He is survived by his beloved wife Brenda; son Brian Childrey; daughter Meredith MacKenzie; son-in-law Adam MacKenzie; grandsons William and Gabriel MacKenzie; brother Harold "Buster" Childrey and sister-in-law Paula Childrey; sisters-in-law Rhonda Latimer and Bobbi Davis; brothers-in-law Bobby Latimer and Wayne Davis; and his corgi puppy Sadie. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Frances Childrey and by Bella, another beloved corgi companion.

Gerald's interests were as rich as they were varied. A voracious reader with a particular love for fantasy and science fiction, he delighted in exploring new worlds through books. He was an avid player of Magic: The Gathering and relished the challenge of high-quality tournaments. A dedicated collector, he took joy in curating stamps and coins over the years.

Saturdays in the fall were reserved for Georgia Bulldogs football-he was a proud alumnus who wore the title "Damn Good Dawg" with honor. Family vacations to Disney World and Universal Studios brought him immense happiness, as did annual celebrations like Oktoberfest and Christmas. Above all else, Gerald treasured time spent with family-whether gathered around a card table or simply enjoying each other's company.

Gerald Lee Childrey will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, loyalty, and unwavering love for those closest to him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
