I too just heard of Professor Hewitt's passing and am sad, but also profoundly glad that I studied with him at Callison. He taught easily and slyly opened your mind if you let him. He taught me that every scholar, philosopher and author had their own position and I was not to blindly adopt it but was to think it through, challenge it and only then judge if it was acceptable. That was immensely empowering, to think that a mere college student had the power to judge an idea. Jerry asked about my post grad plans and I said I was thinking of law school or international relations. He told me that if I chose law school I had to be 100% certain that's what I wanted. He also said a good choice might be the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. I was accepted at Fletcher and I have no doubt it was partially due to his recommendation and that of Dr. Van Alstyne. It was the best choice. Thanks Jerry! Will always remember your contributions to "The Good Life" seminar, they were on point. My condolences to the family.

Deepest condolences to Janelle and all Jerry´s extended family. I will always be in debt and admiration of Jerry for his many extra-academic virtues including chimney repair and unfailing support of colleagues during the altercations involved with University politics. We will not see his like again.

So sorry to hear of Prof. Hewitt´s passing. Two of my fellow Callison College classmates and I just got back from Prof. Lawrence Meredith´s memorial service held this past Saturday at the University of the Pacific´s Morris Chapel. I now regret not getting in touch sooner with Prof. Hewitt to show my appreciation for all he did for me. Requiescat in Pace.
