January 19, 2020
Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Gerald M. Bloomfield II US Marine Major.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Gerald Bloomfield was the kind of leader I still strive to be. Nov 1st 2005 He approached me at breakfast and said that he was too harsh in the way he corrected me for an issue there was on the flight line. I began to say that I deserved to be disciplined when looking me square in the eyes, then Major Bloomfield said You didn't deserve it, and I wanted you to know you are all doing a great job out there. That was the last time we spoke and I have been privileged to serve with such a terrific leader who was unafraid to be brash or humble at the right times.

Remembering those that gave it all on Memorial Day, you cant help but remember "Woody". I didnt know you personally but think about that day often. I was part of a team that reaponded to the crash. The days after, i started to hear all about you and how much you were respected and well liked.
I wish there was more we could have done for you and Micheal that day.

So I remember when Maj. Bloomfield would come into Maintenance Control at HMLA-369 when we where in Iraq. He would always walk up through the counter that had swinging doors like an old cowboy saloon, like a real Gunfighter back from them ol' Western days. Right up over to where the parts were ordered and say to me, "Well Cpl Swan, just like my plane captain keeps my snake fresh so do you Swan" ,and he would thank me and give me a pat on the back and smile then walk away. Did not put two and two together until I knew he was talking about, Until one day he help me out with a logistics problem between us(Marines) and the Air Force. You see I was the one guy in the unit who orders all the aircraft parts the Expeditor. I supplied HMLA-369 Marines in Iraq with fresh aircraft parts. Maj. Bloomfield supply ALL the Marines on the Ground with amazing air support from his AH-1W Super Cobra, with Leadership with always a friendly smile, and a pat on the back. He was an amazing smart man who knew the whole system of the MAGTF and it's logistics. He was a Marine Officer we Enlisted all looked too and inspired to be. A true leader. HE always came to bat for me when there was supply issues with the big brass. I can not believe it has been almost six years since Gunshot 66. Maj. Bloomfield "Beav" it was an honor to serve with you. Thank You. I and your Gunfighters of HMLA-369 Will Never Forget!

Dear Ms. Bloomfield,
Good afternoon maam. My name is Captain Troy Rees. I am the Airframes OIC here at HMLA 369 currently deployed in Afghanistan. We are wrapping up our 7 month deployment here in Afghanistan eagerly awaiting our return home. It has been a very long and busy deployment for everyone. The Gunfighters have performed remarkably, providing support to numerous Marines on the ground in a tough fight with a determined enemy. This is a tradition and legacy established by all of the Gunfighters of the past. People like your husband and Major Martino, who we tragically lost 5 years ago yesterday. There memory is still firmly engrained in our hearts and minds.
I did not personally know your husband, but I have heard a great deal about him from those who have had the pleasure to serve by his side. I have heard of the type of man he was, his heroic actions, and his selfless dedication to all those around him. On November 2nd, 2005 I was a 1stLt flying on my first deployment to Iraq with a different unit. I was one of the first responders to come to your husband’s aid. Our final act that day was to get your husband out of the area and get him back home to you and your family. It was an event that has stayed with me ever since. The more I learned of your husband the more he became a personal hero to me. Ever since then I have tried to live up to be the kind of person he was. I myself became a Gunfighter in 2007 deploying once again to Iraq in 2008 and here again to Afghanistan this past spring. I have taken it personal to make sure people know about the crew of Gunshot 66 and to ensure that “We will never forget”. Their legacy and memory lives on in all of us.
Yesterday November 2nd, 2010, in honor of your husband we flew a flag over the Squadron spaces here in Southern Afghanistan. After sunset the flag was lowered, and given to an AH-1W Cobra crew as they once again supported Marines on the ground in combat. This flag will soon be on its way home to you, flown in honor of your husband. He is still very much with us doing what Gunfighters do. Providing Close Air Support to the Marine rifleman engaged with the enemy. I thank you very much for your continued support and know that you, your husband, and your family are constantly in our hearts, our minds and our prayers. If there is anything you need from the unit feel free to contact either myself or any other contacts you may have with the unit.

Hey Beav - you have a new neighbor! Sarge is right across the street. He has a great view of your "tree" from his final resting place in Section 59. When Sarge's memorial service was over - I strolled over to say hi, with Liz, my brother Marc and Shawn. I didn't realize you two were going to be so close....and what a tear of joy I shed when I realized that you two warriors would be neighbors at Arlington. I know how honored you both were to become acquainted. You turned to me on your first visit to meet Sarge and said - "there sits a true hero". When I returned to visit dad at the Nursing home afterwards - the first words out of his mouth were " Jerry - now there's a true hero". I think of you both every day and revel in the fact that I am blessed to have you as one of my closest brothers....and to have been issued to Sarge as his #1 son. I didn't know until we took him to the WWI Memorial (ashes and knucklebuster ring)that Remagen was memorialized there for prosperity. I heard some of your choice "Beavisms" ringing in my ears as we stood there! It was a unique and humble moment for us all moment.
Merry Christmas Beav! You will be here with us as we raise a glass in your honor -with pride, gratitude and love

To all those who are sharing their stories about Jerry, please keep them coming!
I am a Fowlerville classmate of Jerry's and for the past 3 years myself, and 6 other classmates travel to D.C. to volunteer (this year myself and my friend actually participated) for the MCM Marathon in memory of our dear friend and hero! We always spend Saturday night with Julie (Jer's wife), and we have such a wonderful time catching up on Jer stories, and to be sure Julie is doing okay! It is with deep pleasure that I read all of these marvelous stories about a man who changed and touched so many lives while here. I can not begin to imagine the depth of pain his family feels, but I can tell you that I feel it deep and often wonder why such a outstanding, courageous, upstanding man had to be taken way too early in his life. I guess that is when faith steps in and helps you through the rough days!
Jerry did so many great things, and I know for sure that he watches over us every single day from above! He is probably kicked back up there and has an audience listening to one of his crazy stories :)
Please, if any of you have stories or pictures to share (there is an album already started on here) send them along. I know I enjoy them, and it helps me know that Jerry is still among us..doing what he always did best..being a friend and sharing a smile!
Thank You Again!

To Julie, Ryan, and the Bloomfield family-
It has taken me a while to get a hold of you and I am sorry.
I am so sorry for your loss. Jerry was a great guy and an outstanding Marine!
You do not know me, but I knew Jerry from as far back as EMU. We were both out of the same USMC OSO office in Ann Arbor, Mi. We both attended EMU, but Jerry was a year ahead of me. The few times I saw him in training or around EMU, he was always giving me much needed tips about being a future officer of Marines. In fact, I remember bumping into him once while at OCS. He was in PLC Seniors and I was in the PLC Juniors program when we passed each other during a run on a training trail. Jerry whispered in my direction, "Don't give up." Which was a typical gesture for Jerry and a huge morale booster for me in some dank and winding Quantico training trail.
I next saw Jerry on a flight back to San Diego from Detroit. I had recently stood up for a friend's wedding in the Flint area in the summer of '94 I think it was(?). Towards the end of the flight, I walked to the back of the aircraft to make a head call. Jerry happened to be on that flight and we chatted for a few minutes. We probably swapped phone numbers, but our busy schedules precluded us from getting caught up with each other.
The next and last time I saw Jerry was at 29 Palms. My EAS was 1 JUN 96, so it must have been March of that year. Anyway, my unit was billeted in the A frames of Camp Wilson at 29 Palms. Our job was to safely direct aircraft from point A to point B. All of a sudden Jerry walks in to our A frame. He wanted to get some intel for his flight later in the day. We visited for a bit and of course I told him all that I knew about anything pertaining to his flight. Somewhere I have a picture of us from that day. I'd like to send it to you if I may.
I first heard about Jerry from one of my fraternity brothers who was also a Marine. I then saw the EMU alumni magazine which had an article about Jerry. In the article, Jerry's dad said he was on his third tour in Iraq and that Jerry "fully believed in the mission." I thought that was SO Jerry. Just like when he took the time to encourage me during some run on some arduous running trail in Quantico.
I pray that God can assuage the anguish that Jerry's family must have. He made a difference to a lot of people in this world. He wasn't just marking time with his life. If my wife and I ever have a son...he will be named after Jerry.
Semper Fi,
STEVE WHITE

First of all, I want to apologize for taking so long to make this post.
I was stationed with “The Beav” at MCTSSA. I believe it was 1999 or 2000. I was informed that I would be attending a planning conference in Hawaii and that I would be traveling with Major Bloomfield. I thought it would be best to go introduce myself to the Major and coordinate our travel plans. I found the building he worked in and knocked on his door. My knock was answered with a hearty “Yeah! Come on in!” I entered the room and asked “Major Bloomfield?”. The man sitting at the desk spun his chair around and with a smile said, “BEAV!, Call me Beav man”. I knew I was going to like this man. So, Beav and I made our travel plans and the next week we were in Hawaii. Like most of us in the military, we have friends everywhere and Beav seemed to have more than most. We were greeted at the airport by a friend of his who gave Beav the use of his car for the duration of our stay. Now, I don’t want to dime Beav out but, let’s just say Beav wasn’t much on meetings. He attended what he had to and made all the arrangements and took all the notes he needed to and then it was time to get the hell out of the conference rooms. And who was I to disagree with a Major? We toured the islands North Shore, had a couple beers, and headed back to the hotel area. On the way to our hotel, Beav picked up some sushi from a nearby ABC store. That was the last I saw of Beav that day. The next morning he wasn’t at the agreed upon meeting place (near the coffee stand). I attended the meetings I had to but during the breaks I stuck my head in the other rooms looking for Beav with no luck. I then went to his room and knocked on his door. My knock was answered with more of a moan. Eventually, the door opened and there was Beav. Nearly doubled over, in his underwear, unshaved, disheveled, and frankly, smelling bad. According to him, he had gotten hold of some bad sushi and became VIOLENTLY ILL. I did not return to the meetings that day. Instead, I put him back to bed and went shopping. I picked up some pepto, a few cans of chicken soup, and some crackers and headed back to his room to do what I could for my friend.
Beav was good, honest, descent man. I think of him often and consider myself to be a better man for having known him.
Most Respectfully,
T. Max Miller

Julie, you're right, he flew it for ME. (Actually, I had 5 flags flown.)
While I didn't graduate from Notre Dame, I grew up in Chicago and they're my dad's favorite college team so I follow them (even though he went to Northwestern and the university I graduated from in San Diego doesn't have a football team).
That September 2005 day in the R&R tent, ND beat the U of M Wolverines 17 – 10. Of course he wasn't too happy about the loss, but took it in stride, and of course I didn't rub it in either. But what was surprising about that game, I realized I knew one of the players from U of M, Leon Hall (actually I know his dad), and was shocked to see him playing for the Wolverines. (Leon now plays for the Cincinnati Bengals.)
I'm a reservist, but years ago when I was on active duty I served in HMA-369 (before it was an HMLA and before Maj. Bloomfield served in the squadron), so I have another common thread with him.
I was there in the lobby of the simulator building on the flight line when you came in with your son a couple weeks after the tragedy. I wanted to express my sorrow for your loss, but you were preoccupied.
Sadly, we lost a pilot, Lt. Col. David Greene from our squadron during our first tour in 2004. The flags will remain an important piece of my experience and will serve as a reminder of all those I served with.

Dear Gregory, Thankyou for sharing your memory. Being from ND area, Jer and I also had that friendly rivalry during football season, he loved Michigan football! Please keep the flag because he flew it for YOU and it has special meaning to you! I'm sure he is smiling down on you and glad ND lost yesterday. Take good care and write again.

Maj. Bloomfield's unit (HMLA-369) was replacing ours (HMLA-775) in al Taquaddum in Oct 2005. The first time we met, we were in the R&R tent a couple days after he arrived with his units' advanced party. A bunch of us from 775 were watching the Notre Dame vs Michigan game. I was cheering for ND, and being from Michigan, Maj Bloomfield turned to see who I was. Needless to say, we had a friendly rivalry for the duration of our overlapping tour.
On one of his fam-flights he flew an American flag for me and I still have it stored for a special occassion, or to pass to his family if they'd like to have it.
I think about him quit frequently, especially during college football months. RIP brother, you are a true hero and great American. Rest assured your legacy remains in the hearts and minds of those who served with you.

Dear Jer,
So here we are, another year has passed. The pain has subsided a bit, but the memory and the "ache" are still there! We enjoyed our weekend in D.C. You would be so proud of Julie, as she has began to truly smile again. We love her so much and enjoy every minute we are able to spend with her! As for your family, well let us just say they are remarkable in what they stand for!
We are still fighting this war, but with so many changes that came with the election we may see some great things happen. Regardless, I know you did what you believed in and I Thank You for that! Keep your guiding hand on the shoulders of those still fighting for us, and may your spirit and beliefs live in each one of them!
I am thinking of you always Jer, and until we can meet again...continue to Fly Free My Friend.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Gerald, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Family of Maj. Gerald M Bloomfield II, My name is SSgt Todd J Carrico, I am a Military Training Instructor for the USAF, stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, TX. I am from Belleville, MI and graduated from Belleville H.S. in 1996. Today Aug 24th is my birthday and I had the privilege and honor to do the Run for the Fallen today, and I ran in your loved ones honor. We had 70+ MTI's running for someone different for 5 miles around the base today. I could not think of a better way to honor someone that has paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We as MTI's preach everyday to our trainees that some day they will faced with a difficult situation, and at that time it is what you do with yourself and how you handle the situation is what makes you a member of the world greatest military. Your loved one was one of the troops. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, and I will always remember this birthday for as long as I live. I want to thanks Mrs. Bloomfield also for her dedicated service to the US Marine Corp, because without the spouses behind the scenes the household and the kids at home would not have someone there to help them along the way. The kids would not have someone to explain the long deployments and why dad has to go, among other things. Without you, his missions would have never happened. Thank you. TODD J. CARRICO, SSgt, USAF

To all those remembering Jer...
I have to agree with my dear friend Amy...the Marine Corps Marathon was an awesome experience and one that all of us plan to make an annual event! I was talking to someone on the plane on the way home...telling them Jer's story the way I always do with tears and smiles...and he was so inspired, touched and surprised that nearly 50 people would come from all over the country to honor Jer's memory and raise money for such an awesome cause-The Injured Marine Fund. I told him I wasn't surprised at all. That's just who Jer was, and he inspired great things:)! It was a joy to stand beside all of you and celebrate his life. I know he would want us to be laughing instead of crying, but the tears were healing too. I want to give sincere compliments to Katy, Julie and everyone else for their hard work and dedication to the Injured Marine Fund. Without your work, there would be no Team Beav, girls. You ROCK! What an awesome way to remember and honor your brother and husband!
I can't wait for next year...hoping to make it those 26.2 miles with the rest of you! I'm thinking Jer will help me if I try:) Until then, I hope all of you continue to heal and find peace in the many memories and laughs we shared. Thank you for letting us, members of the Fowlerville Class of '84, be a part of your family and a part of Team Beav! I look forward to the great things we're going to accomplish together for injured marines and their families! All in honor and memory of our guy. Jer...I know you're up there smiling at your beautiful wife and your family. They have "done you proud", just like you did for all of us.
Chelsea: Good luck at Purdue, sweetie!! You're right when you say that Jer is right there with you. That butterfly was definitely him:) Take care and be safe!
Until we meet again...
Love and hugs,

To Jer's Family - I had to take a moment and let you know what an honor and pleasure it was working the Marine Corp Marathon this past Sunday. I have never had such a deep feeling of content! The one that comes when you realize that what you do every day does impact the lives of others, and that we all play on the same team - together! It was so nice to talk to all of you and to share even more memories of Jerry. I believe we covered every age and every crazy, funny, kind thing he ever did! What a wonderful man he was. Watching everyone work together, and knowing how hard Katy has worked on making all of this possible, just shows that Jer lives inside each of us every single day! Gods Blessings to all of you, and I am already looking foward to next years marathon.
Jer - I think about you always my friend! Thanks for being here with us this weekend. Your presence was felt in every hug, every tear, every step. It did wonders for the soul :) My vigil for you is still as strong as the first day you left..and one day..I will see you again!
Love & Hugs!

I found myself looking at this again today, and I couldn't figure out why I was so compelled. And then I realized that it's almost that time again...day after tomorrow. I miss my goofy cousin, who was always there to entertain me, and write letters to me when I was little from wherever he was in the world at that time, and who I was lucky enough to have a beer with a few times. I miss him.

Jer,
Today was pretty hard for me ya know? I thought about you a lot today. I hope you know how much I miss you and your jokes that were always funnier to you than me. :) Purdue was the school you wanted me choose and everyday I walk on campus and think of you. Everyday I see Harry's and I smile because I picture you sitting at the bar having an hour long conversation with the bartender about their life. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you. I'm trying hard to make you proud here at Purdue. You would really love it here, the parties and people! The big football game is coming up, Notre Dame vs. Purdue. I know your going to be there watching with me, I can't wait! Thank you for all of our talks, sometimes I don't know where I'd be without your guidance. I saw a buttefly today and I knew it was you. Thanks for that much needed smile. I love you and miss you so much!!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

On this, the first warm, sunny day in Michigan, another reminder of you pops into my head. The times at school, when the nice weather broke, and we were all laughing and thinking of nothing else but having FUN! I think of you every day, but on days such as this, your warmth touches my heart and I realize again how very much I miss you! God Bless and continue to Fly Free...I watch for you always :)

Beav......Liz and I miss you so very much. Not a day passes that you do not enter our thoughts and prayers. 2 Nov will always be a day of pensive thought and memories of the "great times" that we shared and the sorrow that reached so deeply into the hearts of your family and extended family. Your dedication to God, Country, Family and Duty only serves to inspire us that are left behind. Thank for you for all you have done. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice. Thank you for being..........you. You live on in the hearts of all that you have touched. In those quiet moments when the wind blows so gently here across the river bottom, we still commune and smile and your voice is heard through the rustle of the leaves. Oh.....and by the way The girls are together in CA as I write and you will be happy to know that JJ the new dog, is well housebroken.
You are toasted EVERY time we crank up the Roadkings and ride to Zimmy's where a hardy toast is raised in your honor.

My 2nd cousin Julie was Major Bloomfields wife. I only had the pleasure of meeting Gerry one time after a notre dame game back home in Elkhart, IN. He was a true model of what the Marine Corp stands for. I only wish I would've taken the time to get to know him a little better. I heard of his death 1 week after being stationed at Bolling AFB in Washington DC. As reluctant as I am to say this, I was honored that I could be there for his funeral in Arlington National Cemetery. I would just like to pass on the prayers that all of the 11th LRS Squardron's workers on Bolling AFB have offered to his family. I think about Julie everytime I'm at a funeral in Arlington. I wish her and all of Gerry's family only the best and rest assured you're all in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless you, the United States, and all of my brothers and sisters in uniform who help protect her and all she stands for.

I never had the honor of meeting Maj. Bloonfield. Although my husband served with him for years. I know that he had a great impact on my husband. I was truly effected when my husband called me from Iraq to tell me one of his mentors had been lost. I know from the stories about Maj. that he was a great man and a true marine to the core. I would like to send my prayers to his family. To his wife.... Be strong and know that all of us wifes past, present, and future of the Gunfighters will always be there and we support you to the end.

To Gerald's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

To Ryan:
I was the flight surgeon (doctor) for the Gunfighters from 2003-2005. I served with your dad. He was a good man. Very proud, and really nice and inclusive to everyone.
He would often talk to me about you, probably because I was a doctor, and I know when he was deployed, he missed you very much.
Your dad went on missions to serve his country because he wanted to make the world a better place. He believed he was doing what was right, and he was a true patriot.
I wanted to write to you to tell you that your dad was a good guy. I am sure you know that. He worried about you, but he also knew you were a strong kid.
I wish you the best. Know that your dad is always with you.
Sincerely,
Jessi Taylor

As Thanksgiving approaches, I want you to know that as the sister of a Cobra pilot over in Iraq (who had the honor of being in the same squadron as Jerry), I hold your family in my thoughts and prayers during this holiday season. I am thankful that my brother, 1LT John Coates got the chance to learn from such a great person, officer, and pilot. I could tell that my brother really admired and loved flying with him. Each time that John or anyone else who learned from Jerry flies, I believe his spirit will be there as well, supporting them now even as he did before. He made a difference in my brother's life. Thank you, and I'm very sorry for your great loss.

Our prayers are with you Gerald and the entire Bloomfield family. Thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice for our country & for the millons of people who depend on people like you for the continued American way of life. You were a hero in my book long before you gave your life for our country. We buried your friend, partner & fellow Marine Michael here on Tuesday as I am a friend of the Martino's. I was left with a sense of great pride and sadness as I walked by the final resting place of so many fellow warfighters from both Afghanistan & Iraq. When you see those stones it really hits you as to the very high price of freedom of which we sometime take for granted. Thank you again Major Bloomfield.

Beav,
Ever since I met you, I knew you were someone special. You always had a smile on your face, always said "good morning" and were keenly interested in the things I was doing. You always went out of your way to chat with me to see how things were going. When I heard about the Cobra crash I immediately knew it was a Gunfighter bird. I waited in anguish to find out which of the Gunfighters had been called to heaven. God bless you, your family, and God bless the Marine Corps.

Julie, Ryan and Family ~
I cannot begin to express to you how thankful I am for knowing Jerry. He is truly a remarkable human being. It fills me with pride and admiration when I look at all the sites in Jerry's honor and memory. There are not many in our world that would have such a tribute!
I attended school with Jerry and I am proud to say he will forever be a part of our Class of 1984! We share what few others do. Our class has, and will forever be, a very close and compassionate class. Jerry was always proud to say he was from the Class of 1984. I thank God that his tour in Iraq was delayed long enough so that he could attend our 20th reunion last July. We were all so happy to see him and to finally meet his "Soul Mate," Julie. What a beautiful, strong and brave lady! Her smile sparks a special spot in all our hearts that will remain lit forever and we are proud to say that she is, and will forever be, a part of the Class of 1984!
I asked my sister, Rebecca (Dare) Branch, of San Angelo Texas, to write a poem in Jerry's memory from the Class of 1984. She was honored and humbled to do so. She also had a son who did his tour in Iraq and is now back in the states. She realizes that there is no guarantee when fighting for our freedom! After all the info I have shared with her about Jerry, the sites, his life in school and his accomplishments since, she feels as though she has known him all her life! Jerry had that quality. He could make you comfortable and laughing within moments of meeting him. His smile was contagious and his wit was like no other. He is truly our HERO and has become the Class of 84's "Angel In Flight!"
~Jerry's Poem~
"I'm Not A Hero"
We said, "You are a hero!
We're proud of what you've done.
The path that you have chosen,
The man that you've become."
And he said, "I'm not a hero.
I'm your classmate and your friend.
It's you I proudly serve.
It's you that I defend."
We said, "You are a hero!"
To us you're ten feet tall.
You wear a badge of courage,
When your back's against the wall."
And he said, "I'm not a hero.
I am but a simple man.
I do a job, a job I love,
And do the best I can."
We said, "You are a hero!
For us you proudly fight.
Because of all you sacrifice,
We sleep in peace at night."
And he said, "I'm not a hero.
I'm just like each of you.
Don't thank me for the job I have.
It's what a chose to do."
We said, "You are a hero!
You stand out amongst your peers.
We salute your sense of honor,
Your commitment through the years."
And he said, "I'm not a hero.
It's a dream that I pursue.
If my life is what it costs me,
I will gladly pay what's due."
And he said, "I'm not a hero...
Here's to you Jerry ~ may you fly forever free in God's arms ~ til we meet again.

Julie, Ryan and Family ~
As I search all the sites listed in Jerry's memory, I am filled with pride and admiration. Jerry was such a wonderful person, both inside and out!
I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with him through e-mails set up by the class of 1984. In one particular e-mail I had told him I would send a flag for my youngest and that my son said that he truly "Rocked" for all he was doing, and had already did, for our country. His response "tell your son I don't rock, he does. I'm just an ordinary guy!" That's Jerry. Never one to brag about his accomplishments, but to always be more interested in what we were doing in our lives. It takes a very special, and selfless person to respond the way he did!
I am so lucky to have known Jerry from the days when we were in Middle School to the moment of his very untimely death. There are no words to say that could possibly make you feel better. I would however, like you to always remember that I am here for you and that I say a prayer for your heart's to heal!
I do take great comfort in knowing that Jerry died doing something he so strongly believed in. I know that in his heart, he was right where he felt he should be and that he would give his all to defend our country and keep all of us safe and secure.
What happens now? Where do we all go from here? When will the tears stop? I can only hope that Jerry knows what a couragous fine Marine he was! I pray that he sees all of us ~ who knew, and loved him ~ carrying on his hope for peace! I pray that each of you can find comfort again. Comfort in knowing that Jerry will forever live on in our hearts and that he truly is one of God's best!
"Fly Free My Friend," for you have now become our very own "Angel In Flight!"

Julie and Ryan,
I had met Jerry here at MCTSSA and gotten to know him and both of you while he was here. He was a smart and brillant man along with a great sense of humor. Ryan my kids would like to say Hi, if you remember playing video games with Jessica and Daniel at our house. My kids have never forgotten you. Jessica and Daniel would like you to know that they are sorry and want you to know that their prayers and thoughts are with you. But they also would like you to know that your Dad will become your guardian angel and be with you for the rest of your life. Julie when you came into Jerry's life you just made him the happiest man in the world. So the time that you had with him really made him very happy. I'm very sorry and want you both to know that my family is here for both of you in thoughts and prayers. God bless you and the Country we live in. He was a great friend and a great Marine!

For the entire Bloomfield family: My deepest sympathies. Jerry and I attended college together at Eastern back in the 1980's where we shared way too many Physics classes. One day, we were discussing our plans for the summer when we suddenly realized we were both headed to Marine Officer Candidate School with the dream of becoming Naval Aviators. Strange as it was, we sent letters and postcards to each other that whole summer of 1990, even though we were at the same school in different companies, venting out our frustrations and dreaming of graduation. In flight school -- we lived 3 doors away. I was there when Ryan was born, and there to fly back to Detroit with Jerry and Ryan (as we both did many times) to visit our families (and our Julie's). We both attended Naval Postgrad school and ended up doing our paybacks out here at Camp Pendleton together. Even though it has been nearly 20 years now, it does not seem like we spent enough time together. As I get ready to deploy and fly in support of our country again, I will always keep Jerry's memory with me. He volunteered to go to Iraq just before the war kicked off in early 2003. I remember asking him why, since he wasn't going to fly while he was there. He said simply he felt like he needed to be there. I joked with him, since I knew how bad it would suck once he got there, but it didn't faze him at all. His heart was in the right place. If there is one thing I know about Jerry after all of these years, it's that his heart was always in the right place. With his son, his wife, and his country. If you're looking for a hero, look no further than Gerald M. Bloomfield. Again, my deepest, deepest sympathies to his family. Semper Fidelis my brother.
