Gerald SWANSON Obituary
1942 - 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Swanson at his home in Victoria, British Columbia, on the morning of October 24, 2017. He died peacefully in the company of his wife and partner, Shokoufeh Sakhi, along with family and friends. He is survived by his brother, Bob; sister, Cindy; his sons, Gabriel and Shahram; and his children from his previous marriage to Jean (nee Mckee), Paul and Lora. He will be missed by friends from across the world, his colleagues and students at York University. Bill led his full life as a man of restless patience. He loved fully, laughed whole-heartedly, and engaged with devotion. Always striving to embody democratic relations, he respected the autonomy of all who he encountered, even when it pained him deeply. He gave room to all of us, making us feel loved, safe, and respected in his presence. Bill was and is loved for who he was. We are forever grateful.

Remembering my brother runs the gamut from riding the handle bars on his bicycle across town to his apartment, tobogganing in deep snow at Uncle Oscar's in Buxton, ducking in his VW when he wanted to whistle at girls and didn't need a kid sister in the car, watching him sing and play with his children, older brotherly advice (sometimes taken, sometimes not), but always love. Miles separated us so often, but never love. Bill is in my heart from my first memory and will always be with me.

We were friends for nearly a half-century. Few people have the capacity to embrace the evolution of their friendships over such a span of years. Bill was an extremely inclusive man, and I will miss him.
