Gerard Nugent Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2008.
Gerard Peter Nugent, Sr. (Jerry) Gerard (Jerry) Peter Nugent, Sr., died June 22, 2008, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 92. He was born September 19, 1915, in Flushing, New York, to Patrick and Veronica (Joyce) Nugent. His parents immigrated to the United States (through Ellis Island) from Ireland. He graduated from Highland Park (Deerfield Shields) High School in 1934 and attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He married Tillie Jocus in Holy Family Catholic Church, North Chicago, Illinois, on April 19, 1940. After Tillie's death in 1987, he married Mary Rodbro (Poe) and retired in San Diego, California. Following Mary's death he moved to Austin, Texas, to be with his two sons. Jerry had an entrepreneurial spirit. From marketing alcoholic spirits, Chinese restaurant owner, liquor store and bar owner, wholesale beer distributor, real estate investor, to a student of the financial markets. He settled on a career to help people with Investors Diversified Services (Ameriprise) where he continuously ranked as a Top Ten producer. He took great pleasure in visiting with school teachers, firemen, policemen, city and county employees, and others in the greater Lake County, Illinois, area emphasizing the importance to save for the future. His greatest satisfaction came when the same good people would single him out and thank him for his help in securing their futures. He was a generation ahead of the federally recognized Individual Retirement Account. He understood the importance of compounding investment income. Jerry was preceded in death by his wives, Tillie and Mary, his parents, brother Jim, and sisters Nora McQuillan and Mae Kantner. He is survived by two sons and their spouses, Jerry (Phyllis Carr) Nugent, Jr. and Patrick (Betty Ann Henley) Nugent, all of Austin, Texas; grandchildren and spouses, Patrick Lyndon (Nicole) Nugent, San Antonio, Texas; Jerry (Lynne) Nugent III, Austin, Texas; Gwendolyn (Keith) Flanagan, Washington, D.C.; Nicole (Brent) Covert, Austin, Texas; Dillon Nugent, Glen Ellyn, California; Rebekah (Jeremy) McIntosh, Toronto, Canada; Claudia (Steven) Brod, Miami Beach, Florida; and Amy (Aaron) Wismar, Darien, Connecticut; and great-grandchildren, Tatum and Taylor Nugent, San Antonio, Texas; Grace and Noah Nugent, Austin, Texas; Johnson and Claudia Covert, Austin, Texas; Eloise, Tucker, and Luci McIntosh, Toronto, Canada; Sophia and Bella Brod, Miami Beach, Florida; and Truman, Henley, and Quincy Wismar, Darien, Connecticut. The family wishes to thank Jerry's caregivers, Pam Yonikus, Betty Thomas (Hansford House), Leslie Alexander, R.N. (Odyssey Hospice), and Peggy Russell, M.D. A memorial service will be held at 10 o'clock a.m., Friday, July 25, 2008, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 450 Keller Avenue, Waukegan, Illinois. Final interment will immediately follow at Ascension Cemetery, 1920 Buckley Road, Libertyville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to St. Paul's Indian Mission, 103 Church Dr., Marty, SD 75361.. http://wcfish.com
