Gerard Vander Voort Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 4 to Jan. 5, 2023.
Gerard (Jerry) Theodore Vander Voort, age 82, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 30, 2022. He was married to fellow Parsippany High School teacher Judith Ann Vander Voort (Carlucci) on April 30, 1972. They spent 40 wonderful years together before Judy's passing in 2012, raising their two daughters in Hopatcong, NJ, and making wonderful family memories. Jerry is survived by his daughter, Nicole Donnelly (Vander Voort), her husband, David Donnelly, and their two children, Cate and Conor, and his daughter Danielle Fournier (Vander Voort), her husband, Chris Fournier, and their two children, Zoe and Cameron.

Jerry, was born in the Netherlands on March 11, 1940 and was one of three boys. When he was 10 years old, he moved to America (Patterson, NJ) with his mother and brothers. Jerry worked hard and quickly acclimated, excelling through levels of education, attending Montclair University where he received his teaching degree (he would go on to get his PhD in Education later in life). While teaching at Parsippany High School, he met Judy -- they taught together for over 30 years before retiring and moving south, building a home in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. Judy passed shortly after moving to their new home and, to honor her, Jerry remained living in the house they built together.

Jerry was an incredibly proud and accomplished man, highly intelligent and very handy, and a present father who could be counted on for the impromptu math or science lesson or a dance around the kitchen floor. He impacted so many students who came through his classroom and so many players who he coached on the soccer field. And he truly loved his wife. He mourned and grieved for her since her passing and we are grateful he has found peace once again, reunited with her.

There will be no wake or funeral service, as per Jerry's wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Cancer Society, a cause that remained close to Jerry's heart since Judy's passing. He will live on through our memories and stories.

Best teacher I ever had. I owe him a tremendous debt as I never would have made it to space without him.

I had Mr. VanderVoort for Chemistry 1 and Physics 1 @ PHS. The only blemish to my GPA was in 3rd quarter Physics where Jerry "hooked" me with a C... all the rest were A's and a few B's throughout, my PHS academic career. I deserved it though... I will always remember Mr. V as my toughest teacher. He was a good man and I thank him for instilling in me... FORTITUDE! Thank you, Mr./Dr. VanderVoort
